SPRING MASS SYSTEM

INTRODUCTION:-

Spring mass system is a setup used to determine the experimental frequency. The body whose
frequency is to be determined is suspended by a springs. When the body is moved through a
small distance along a vertical axis through the centre of gravity, it will be accelerate in a
vertical plane. Then by taking the following readings with the single mass system we can
determine the frequency of a body.

PROCEDURE:-

The following steps to be carried out to determine the frequency of the given body.

1. Fix the top bracket at the side of the scale and insert one end of the spring on the hook.

2. At the bottom of the spring fix the other plat form.

3. Note down the reading corresponding to the plat form.

4. Add the weight and observe the change in deflection.

5. With this determine spring stiffness.

6. Add the weight and make the spring to oscillate for 10 times.

7.Note the corresponding time taken for 10 oscillations and calculate time period.

8.From the time period calculate experimental natural frequency.

TABULATION

TABULAR COLUMN FOR OSCILLATIONS:

SL.NO WEIGHT NO. OF TIME TAKEN

ADDED OSCILLATIONS .t sec

FORMULA (UNDAMPED CONDITION)

Time period Tp = N/t

Natural Frequency = fn =1/Tp.

Theoretical frequency Fn= (1/2) x  K/M X 9.81

Where K spring stiffness

Stiffness, k = load/deflection N/m

Experimental natural frequency, fn(exp) =1/t Hz

Theoretical natural frequency, fn(the) = 1/2√(g/) Hz

RESULT

Thus the natural frequency of spring mass system by undamped condition
