Understanding the Alternative Learning System

The document discusses the Alternative Learning System (ALS) in the Philippines. ALS provides non-formal education options for those who cannot access formal schooling. It aims to give all Filipinos access to basic education that fits their situations and needs. ALS classes take place in communities using learning modules for at least 3 months until learners become literate or acquire necessary competencies. The program addresses issues like illiteracy and high dropout rates by providing more educational opportunities. While students face some problems with content and attendance, ALS overall provides an alternative for learners to earn comparable qualifications to the formal education system.

INTRODUCTION

Rationale (Joyce Ann Neri)

Alternative Learning System it is the parallel learning system in
the Philippines that provides a practical option to the existing
formal instruction. When one does not have or cannot access
formal education in schools,ALS is an alternate or substitute.
ALS includes both non-formal and informal sources of
knowledge and skills.
Every Filipino has a right to free basic education. However
many Filipinos do not have a chance to attend and finish formal
basic education. There are those who dropout from schools due
to various external and internal reasons. While some do not even
have schools in their communities.

Setting of the Problem (Rachelle Sabalboro, Elaine Samaniego )

The alternative learning system was conduct to teach the
learners near by the barangay halls, pavilions and also by at
home, and with the help of barangay official they can be able to
use the available room. Learning sessions take place in the
community using ALS learning modules for at least 3 months or
until such time the learners have become literate (for Basic
Program) or has acquired necessary competencies (for
Accreditation and Equivalency Program) before moving on to
another barangay.
Literature Foundation (Joyce Ann Neri)
Formal education, with is overarching goals to dispense
knowledge and inculcate skills to the youth, is not without flaws
in its system. This is true for almost every society like the
Philippines, which had 4 million children and youth who
were out of school in 2013 (PSA,2015).
To address the issue of the rising number of out-of-school
youth, the Department of Education has been promoting the
administration of Alternative --Learning System for affected and
at-risk members of communities in different parts of the country.
This program seek to address problems such as illiteracy and
high dropout rates.

Seriousness of the Problem (Avhie Belmonte, Rachel Priolo)

formal basic education. There are those who dropout from
school due various external and internal reasons. While come do
not even have schools in their communities. To alculate the
issue Alternative learning system (ALS) was established to
provide all Filipinos the chance to have access and complete
their basic education in a way fits their distinct situations and
needs .
In terms of students problem in the contentand instruction
in ALS. The data reaveled that students have minimal problems
in the content and instruction but faced more issue one of the
students reasons is that they had a hard time attending all classes
and suspensions of class affected the number of days that they
all attend school.

addressing the needs of marginalized groups, The program cuts
the time needed to finish high school, Hence segnificaly cuts.

educational qualification comparable to that gained through the
formal school system.

that they encountered in ALS, Some of students suggested that
one of them should donate more bottles for them to sell so that
