What is marketing?
Honestly speaking, I have always been confusing marketing with many other things such
as advertising or sales, which are actually some small part of marketing.
I've heard alot of people saying that marketing is very irritating and manipulative and
that it creates unnecessary needs. I used to think that marketing uses different strategies
to make people love the product and buy the product.
But in real, the purpose of marketing is not to fool people but to present the product in
an attractive way so that they could be better than their competitors.
Marketing is not about the annoying pop-up ads that we see on the internet, neither
about the unwanted ads that we get in emails, nor about the cold callings.
Rather, marketing is more about understanding the society and the environment we live
in. It’s not about pushing products to everybody who has money to buy something.
Good marketers always work to find those people who want the type of product the
company offers and are willing to pay for it. once they find it, marketers focus on
learning how they can serve them better and how they should communicate with them
appropriately.
Marketing requires researches, identification of target markets and building relationship
with customers. All of these has to be done within the the budget that company
provides. So the marketers has to be very strategic.
Basically, marketing can be defined in very simple words as, "satisfying the needs of
people profitably."
The very first step that marketers do is they identify a specific need of people and
analyze whether there is a need to create a new product or service. They predict what
the demand of that product would be. They also search the market if there exists any
other company that offers similar product. If there is, then they look for a unique selling
point i.e how their product could be different from that of their competitor. After doing
all of this, they finally launch their product and start promotions and advertisements.
Therefore, marketing is a very broad discipline. It's not just promotion, not same as
advertising, it's not selling and not exactly just branding.
