A
Going shopping has always been one of the most popular activities in the world. However, its meaning has
changed lately, as the concept of ‘going’ has become something new: online.

B
The huge popularity of online shopping is creating chaos on city streets. The number of online deliveries is
skyrocketing and so is the number of delivery trucks on the roads. This is increasing traffic jams and
pollution. The BBC reports that parcel deliveries went up by almost 50 per cent between 2014 and 2016. This
could increase by up to 28 per cent a year over the next three years. Delivery drivers are all trying to deliver
parcels on time. Many have to park illegally, or double park. Mr Chu, 49, has been a driver with UPS since
1990. When he started, he says, "Nobody ordered water in the past but now, they order everything."

C
Companies are investing heavily to meet demand, spending billions on new facilities and aircraft, increasing
weekend hours, and installing new technology to speed shipments to customers. Firms are experimenting with
ways to make deliveries more efficient and bring down costs. They have embraced ideas like lockers, rolled
out eBikes in select locations, and pushed for people to collect items in stores.

D
Many cities have taken decisions to solve the problems. Cities in Europe and Asia have prohibited deliveries
when roads are busiest. Because food delivery is also causing trouble is some areas of London, companies
delivering food in central London must now ask for permission to operate. As regards America, New York
Mayor Bill de Blasio announced an experimental prohibition on deliveries during the rush hours on some of
the city's most crowded streets. The city's Department of Transportation in New York wants to get 900
businesses to make deliveries at non-peak hours - currently there are 400 business participating.
