Learning English

Nowadays, millions of people want to learn or improve their English but it is not easy to find the most

appropriate method. Is it better to study in Britain or to take a course in your own country?

The advantages of going to Britain seem obvious. Firstly, you will be able to listen to the language all the

time you are in the country. A_______. Another advantage is that you have to speak the language in class if

4th YEAR-01 2
you are with other people. If you do an English course in your own country, it is quite common to use your

mother tongue in class and thus the learning process is slower.

On the other hand, there are also advantages of staying at home to study. B_______. What is more, it is a lot

cheaper than going to Britain. However, it is unlikely to achieve the same results. But if you have a good

teacher, it is possible to learn in a more accurate way than in Britain.

To sum up, I reckon that if you have enough time and enough money, the best choice is to spend some time in

the UK. C________. The most important thing to do in this situation is to maximise your opportunities: to

speak only English in class and to try to use English whenever possible outside the classroom.

Task A: Insert sentences 1 to 3 in the right blank and complete the boxes with A, B or C

1 You do not need to make big changes to your life.

Unfortunately, this is not the case for most people, so taking a course might be the only
2
viable option.
3 You will be surrounded completely by the language wherever you go.

Task B Circle T for true and F for false. Correct the false statement/s on the blank line/s below.

4 Learning English in a language school in your country might take more time. T F

5 It is never possible to learn better in a language school than in Britain. T F
