THE STATUE OF LIBERTY

The statue is on Liberty Island, fifteen minutes by sightseeing ferry from Manhattan ,USA It was the
work of a French sculptor, and it was a gift from the French people of the United States. A ____ they
were shown all over France, and people gave money that helped to pay for the next part of the body.

Then, in 1884, all the parts were put together for the first time in Paris to make sure they were the right
size. They were, so the whole statue, which weighed over 200 tonnes, was taken to pieces again, put into
crates and sent across the Atlantic to America.

There, in 1886, it was erected, and for the next thirteen years it was the tallest structure on that side of the
Atlantic. B ____ . Today, however, it is only as tall as an ordinary New York department store.

Nowadays, the Statue of Liberty attracts millions of tourists. They take trips around Liberty Island, or
they land and squeeze into the lift that takes them as far as the ladys left shoulder. C_____ On their

nose. Her nose alone is over three metres wide.

From the crown on the top of her head tourists can then look out towards the famous skyline of
