Title: Favoritism in hiring teachers and on the effect in the organization

I. Introduction
Is favoritism a good thing? It might have happened in your family among siblings or
in school with a teacher or at work with your boss.

Favoritism is a poison to employee morale, it creates terrible feelings toward the

management and towards the employees who are treated special. In terms on hiring
teachers refers to a practice in which a person is treated differently better than others,
not necessarily because the person has the qualification in terms of skill requirements
but sometimes other aspects that are not related to job performance.

It is considered discrimination and discrimination is illegal and immoral. Thus

favoritism does not benefit anyone in the organization but it destroys everything.

Hatred can cause not only sickness but also the mood of employees in carrying out
their duties and responsibilities every day. Certainly such emotional condition affects
the performance of their duties.

One kind of favoritism is Cronyism is the other side of nepotism. It is the act of hiring
friends regardless of qualifications. One of the main problems with cronyism is the
feeling of authority that employees hired under this position. Because of their close
relationship to the superior, they feel they deserve raises and promotions that should
be reserved for more qualified staff members. These groups feel powerful and can
influence other people in the organization and superior. These groups are feared by
other group and may create conflict in the workplace and can result in losing qualified
workers.

Therefore management should be careful in playing favoritism. Before indulging in

favoritism on hiring teachers, consider how your actions might affect other
applicants.
II. Narration

It was happened this year, when I’ve recently experienced favoritism in applying
teaching position in DWCV. It is one of private schools here in Vigan. Since this is
my first time to apply such position after my graduation. I am very much willing to
go in to this school because this is my Alma when I was in elementary. I almost knew
all the teachers in the elementary because they were my teachers then when I was in
grade school but of course there are some new teachers anyway.
When they saw me applying and choosing this school, my former teachers were so
glad to know and meet me again after so long time. I come to know that my grade
five adviser before is now the principal of this school, We can call her “Ma’am P”.
On the day of examination, we are all so nervous. There were many applicants who
came from this school, some other schools like St.Paul and also Unp. “Ma’am P” told
all of us that there are certain steps on applying in this school, first is to pass the
exam, and if you pass it, you’ll go to the next level, the interview step then after that
is the on the spot demonstration teaching. In the first step, I was happy because I
passed the exam, then when interview comes, I also passed it because they texted me
that I will continue to the next level. The last step, we were going to have the on the
spot demonstration teaching, a bit nervous because for all the applicants who applied
then this last step, my friends from UNP didn’t make it to the last step. I’m the only
applicant who came from other school, UNP. All of them are now graduated from
this school.

After the on the spot demonstration teaching, we were chatting and making comments
about our performance, the Divine applicants told me that I’m good on the
demonstration teaching, even my former elementary teachers told me so because they
were there for me to observe and gave me grades according to my performance. I was
very happy then, and I was expecting that I will be hired in this school because of
their compliments, observations that they all said to me and I knew that I have that
capabilities and skills.
But two weeks after, I didn’t receive any text or call. A friend of mine who’s working
on that school just told me that they already had chosen teacher to work on that
school. The school needs four teachers, but I wasn’t chosen to be one of them. I came
to realized that the four teachers were graduated from that school. They were all
Divinians and I was shocked because the two teachers don’t take the board exam yet
before. I don’t know what to feel that time.

A month after, my former teachers told my mother that they are disappointed with the
result , since they gave me high grades because of my good performance and they
choose me to be hired in this school. Then they told that the final result will came
from the principal “Ma’am P”

At first I was disappointed with the result, after all that I’ve been through. I’m always
wondering what qualification in terms of skill requirements or other aspects that they
need to an applicant. Then I came to know, that one of the applicant hired the fact that
she is the principal’s friend and the sister of her secretary gives her an advantage over
the other applicants. I can now say that I am a victim of favoritism. It is the act of
hiring friends regardless of qualifications.

III. Discussion

One kind of favoritism is Cronyism, is the other side of nepotism. It is the act of
hiring friends regardless of qualifications. One of the main problems with cronyism is
the feeling of power that employees hired under this position. Because of their close
relationship to the superior, they feel they deserve raises, advantage and promotions
that should be reserved for more qualified applicants. These groups feel powerful and
can influence other people in the organization and even the superior. These groups are
feared by other group and may create conflict and can result in losing qualified staff.

Favoritism is considered negative because of its effect not only to the organization
but also to the other employees.

When the employees are hired because of family relationship, friendship and not
because of certain skill qualifications and then not being able to perform the job,. And
if the executive staff begins hiring family members or friends because they need jobs,
not because of their qualifications and ability, and then such practices can affect the
company's profitability or performance. Therefore, the top management should
consider skill qualifications in hiring and not favoritism.

Favoritism is a moral issue. It is a moral issue because it violates basic moral

standards which are justice and fairness. Moral standards dictate to do justice and to
be fair to all. Definitely favoritism violates such principles. Aristotle argued that
“equals should be treated equally and unequals unequally. In relation to employment
practices, it tells us that employees who possess the same qualification and perform
the same or similar responsibilities should be treated the same. Favoritism, cronyism,
and nepotism all interfere with fairness because they give undue advantage to
someone who does not necessarily merit this treatment (Judy Nadler and Miriam
Schulman, 2006).

IV. Legal Bases

Labor laws for Favoritism. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits a wide variety of
employment discrimination, including based upon age, gender, race, religion or
disability. A pattern of promoting only members of one group, denying opportunities
to minorities or creating a hostile work environment for minorities are forms of
favoritism that qualify as discrimination. The discrimination does not have to be
deliberate, but for it to be considered discrimination, it must be part of a regular
practice or policy. For example, a manager who chooses employees based on how
much he likes working with them, but who only seems to like working with white
men, could be practicing illegal favoritism.

V. Conclusion
Favoritism, cronyism, and nepotism also undermine the common good. Under
utilitarian ethics, the rule is that you can act only the act that promotes happiness of
the greater majority or the common good. The message of individual sacrifice is
emphasized. Each person should promote only those act that will contribute to
common good but not to individual interest. The practice of favoritism is against such
principle. When someone is granted a position because of connections rather than
because he or she has the best credentials and experience, is considered individual
preferential treatment which will lead to the disadvantage of the organization or
common good.
Favoritism is a preferential treatment to a certain employees or groups of employees.
Such definition is a clear indication of discrimination. It destroys the moral and
motivation of employees to work. Definitely favoritism is bad and immoral. The
effect of favoritism is devastating, not only to the life of individual employees but to
the life of the organization. It loses its competitiveness power against other
competitors and it will lead to its bankruptcy. Thus it must be avoided by all cost.

VI. Recommendation
As we see the effect of favoritism, it is obvious that favoritism does not bring any
good to the organization. Therefore, there is no way of perpetuating it but it should be
stopped by all means. Displays of favoritism, or even its perception, can destroy
relationships, initiative and trust. We must always be alert to its presence and
suppress it. Therefore we should always avoid promoting favoritism by all means
such as spending extra time with preferred workers, overlooking mistakes made by
favorite employees and assigning perks to employees because you like them. If
you’re an employee working in an environment where a boss is practicing favoritism,
double-check your impressions by looking for specific examples of preferred
treatment. Once you’ve confirmed that this is a problem in your workplace, visit the
personnel department with your examples. Explaining the situation in a concise,
professional way gives you more credibility; be careful not to make rash accusations.
It is recommended that the organization should introduce or establish a policy
prohibiting favoritism in the workplace. The organization should specify practices
that are considered favoritism and indicate punishment related to favoritism
practices.
