TITLE OF THE STUDY
“A STUDY ON EFFECTIVENESS OF ORGANIZATIONAL CITIZENSHIP BEHAVIOUR
IN VIJAYA ENERGY PLUS PVT. LTD”

INTRODUCTION OF THE STUDY

What constitutes a good employee in the modern workplace? In India the organizational
hierarchical structures may be flatter, or less emphasised in small or medium sized business.
It is always to have good relationship with the co-workers. Being supportive and helpful with
colleagues in a way that benefits the organization and which leads towards the organizational
goals.

Organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) has gained more of academic attention since its
conception. It is perceived to be something intangible in nature and also it is difficult to
quantify the concepts like ‘helpfulness’ or ‘friendliness’. OCB is not formally recognized or
rewarded but yet it has been shown to have a considerable positive impact at the
organizational level.

What is Organizational citizenship behaviour?

Organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) has undergone subtle definitional revision since
the term was coined in the late 1980’s, but the construct remains the same as its core. OCB
refers to anything that employees chooses to do voluntarily and spontaneously with their own
willingness to accord, which often lies outside of their specified contractual obligations. OCB
may not always be directly and formally be recognised or rewarded by the company, through
salary increment or promotions but it is through supervisory and co-worker ratings. In this
way it can facilitate future reward indirectly. Finally and critically, OCB must ‘promote the
effectiveness functioning of the organization’ (organ,1988,p.4).
