Martyrs Day is a national mourning holiday that recalls the popular

movement in Panama on Thursday, January 9, 1964, whose objective was
to claim the presence of the Panamanian flag in the territory known as the
Canal Zone.

¿As it is celebrated?

Martyrs' Day (Spanish: Día de los Mártires) is a Panamanian day of national mourning
which commemorates the January 9, 1964 anti-American riots over sovereignty of
the Panama Canal Zone. The riot started after a Panamanian flag was torn and
Panamanian students were killed during a conflict with Canal Zone Police officers and
Canal Zone residents. It is also known as the Flag Incident or Flag Protests.
U.S. Army units became involved in suppressing the violence after Canal Zone police
were overwhelmed, and after three days of fighting, about 22 Panamanians and four
U.S. soldiers were killed. The incident is considered to be a significant factor in the
U.S. decision to transfer control of the Canal Zone to Panama through the
1977 Torrijos–Carter Treaties.

A day to honour mothers was first celebrated in Panama on 11 May 1924
and was established by the Rotary Club of Panama. President Belisario
Porras declared it as a national holiday.
In 1930, Hercilia de Arosemena, the wife of the president at the time,
suggested that 8 December was a more fitting date than May for the
holiday. Panama was and remains a predominantly Roman Catholic
country, so associating Mother's Day with a holy day that already celebrated
Mary, the mother of Jesus was seen as apt.
