ONLINE ASSIGNMENT: A MOTIVATIONAL SCHEME FOR PUPILS TO WORK

ON THEIR ASSIGNMENTS IN MATHEMATICS AND IN DEVELOPING THE ICT

SKILLS OF GRADE VI PUPILS IN DAAN SARILE INTEGRATED SCHOOL

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of online

assignments in Mathematics VI to motivate pupils to do their homework and to

develop their skills in ICT.

Participants were my grade VI pupils who received 1 online assignment

weekly along with their regular Math sessions in the 4th Quarter of School Year

2014-2015. A free website class were created and each of my pupils was registered

and given a unique code to get an access of the registered online class. This free

website has package of 10-item assignments in a certain topic for pupils to answer.

Each of the assignment is bundled with lesson for them to review before answering

the questions in each topic. The online class also included a message menu for

pupils’ queries and interactions with classmates regarding the assigned topic.

The pupils worked independently on the computer or a cellular phone with

internet access in a certain topic within a week. During the study, pupils took on-

going daily instruction in mathematics along with the traditional assignments.

Sir:

I have the honor to seek permission and approval from your good office to
conduct a School-Based Action Research entitled “Online Assignment: A
Motivational Scheme for Pupils to Work on their Assignments in
Mathematics and in Developing the ICT Skills of Grade VI Pupils in Daan
Sarile Integrated School”, this School Year 2014-2015. It is envisioned that
through findings of this research work, the researcher would, in one way or another,
contribute to improve the study habits of pupils by doing their assignments and
develop their skills in ICT.

Attached herewith is the copy of the Action Research proposal.

Hoping for your favourable action regarding this matter. Thank you very
much and more power.

Very truly yours,

ONLINE ASSIGNMENT: A MOTIVATIONAL SCHEME FOR PUPILS TO WORK

ON THEIR ASSIGNMENTS IN MATHEMATICS AND IN DEVELOPING THE ICT

SKILLS OF GRADE VI PUPILS IN DAAN SARILE INTEGRATED SCHOOL

THE RESEARCH PROBLEM

Rationale

Online assignment in Mathematics is a strategy to be introduced to Grade VI

pupils of Daan Sarile Integrated School wherein all aspects of dealing with

assignments are maintained in a location, accessible from anywhere with an internet

connection.

By dealing with assignments online, all pupils, wherever they are, can work at

the same time schedule. No need to post assignments in the regular mail because

on-time result were readily available for easy reference and retrieval. Pupil’s

attainment of data for each individual question in a topic can be viewed. The

physical storage space required for paper handling can also be reduced.

Participants will be my grade VI pupils who received an online assignment

weekly along with their regular Math sessions in the 4th Quarter of School Year

2014-2015. A free website class were created and each of my pupils will be

registered and given a unique code to get an access of the registered online class.

This free website has package of 10-item assignments in a certain lesson for pupils

to answer. Each of the assignment is bundled with lesson for them to review before

answering the questions in each lesson. The online class also included a message

menu for pupils’ queries and interactions with classmates and subject teacher

regarding the assigned lesson.

The pupils worked independently or a group of two or more on the computer

or a cellular phone with internet access in a certain topic within a week. During the

study, pupils took on-going daily instruction in mathematics along with the

traditional assignments.

This new strategy will be of great help for our pupils to motivate them to

work on their assignments in a joyful way and to develop their skills in ICT.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of online assignments in

motivating pupils to work on their assignments and to develop the ICT skills of the

Grade VI pupils in Daan Sarile Integrated School.

Specifically, it answers these questions:

1. Does the online assignment motivate pupils to work on their

assignments?

2. Does the online assignment develop the ICT skills of the Grade VI

pupils in Daan Sarile Integrated School?

Statement of Hypothesis

Regarding the problem of this study, the researcher believed that the

following will likely to happen if the grade VI pupils will be given online assignments

in Mathematics:

1. Grade VI pupils were motivated to work on their assignments in

Mathematics.

2. The skills in ICT of grade VI pupils in Daan Sarile Integrated School

were developed.
Significance of the Study

The results of this study will be a great help in providing an alternative way of

giving assignments in Mathematics.

Also, this is important to the following:

1) Grade VI pupils

Being the respondent of this study, the pupils will be more inspired in doing their

assignments while doing it online. Their ICT skills will also be developed for they

will be spending time weekly using a computer or a cellular phone doing their

assigned topics. They can also interact with the

2) Subject Teacher

This online class will be of great help for the subject teacher because checking of

assignments will be just a click away. Once the subject teacher logged in, he can

easily track his pupils’ performance regarding the given assignment. Reduction of

storage facilities will be observed unlike in using the customary paper version of

daily assignments.

3) Researchers

This will serve as a reference material that can lead to further studies, thus

developing new and effective way of motivating pupils to do their assignments.

METHODS AND PROCEDURE

Research Design

Participants

The participants of this study are the Grade VI pupils of Daan Sarile

Integrated School, Division of Cabanatuan City, School Year 2014-2015.

Gathering Instrument

The instrument to be used in this study is the Online Class created by the

Mathematics teacher (the researcher) which can be accessed at

https://learn.quipperschool.com. A set of 10 item a week in a specific topic in

Mathematics VI is to be given for them to answer once they logged in and accessed

their online class.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The following tools to be used to tabulate the data are as follows:

1. Frequency Distribution

2. Percentage

Date of Implementation

The research will be conducted from February 02, 2014 to March 13, 2015.
