Admissions 2019-20

Introduction
Established in June, 1951 the University of Karachi is known as one of the premier
centers of teaching and research in the sub-continent and the third world. A large number
of students from Karachi and other parts of the country are desirous of admission at this
university for its high standard of education and highly qualified faculty. A number of
scientists and scholars affiliated with the University are working in important positions
both within and outside Pakistan and have won significant recognition and acclaim. One
of the institutes of the University has got the distinction of being named as the Centre of
the Third World Academy of Sciences. Students from several foreign countries are also
pursuing for the Masters and Doctorate degrees. As the population of the city is
increasing day by day, it is a real challenge for the University to accommodate all the
applicants in various courses of studies in the morning program. Hence, to meet the
increasing demand of education in various disciplines, the university has been running
the Evening Programs in several departments at the MS, Masters, BS, B.A./B.Sc.(Hons.),
Diploma and Certificate levels since the Directorate of Evening Program was established
in 1995 to administer the Evening Program. The curricula for Morning and Evening
programs are identical for the awards of university's degrees. In most cases, same
teachers as well as the same laboratories and library facilities are available to the students
of the morning and evening programs. Attendance, teaching and examination standard
are the same for both the shifts.
At present, teaching in the University campus is conducted under eight faculties; Faculty
Arts & Social Sciences, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Islamic
Studies, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Management & Administrative Sciences, Faculty of
Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences and Faculty of Science. As many as 56
departments and over 24 research institute/centers are imparting education to more than
35,000 students including students from foreign countries. The faculty comprises more
than 650 highly qualified and experienced teachers; many of them have obtained higher
degrees from abroad and earned international repute. The non-teaching staff comprises
more than 2500 members to help with administrative and other matters.

The University of Karachi is also an affiliating and examining body. At present, more
than 145 colleges and institutions are affiliated to the University. The courses of studies
for these institutions are approved by the University and examinations are also conducted
under its auspices. The university conducts examination of about 150,000 students
studying in these colleges/institutes, and prepares their results and awards degrees.

Students' Affairs
To look after students affairs in general, and to supervise their extra curricular activities,
an office of Advisor Students Affairs for the purpose is situated at the first floor of the
administration block. Teachers and the staff are available for guidance of the students.

In order to help the passing out students in securing jobs and solve their practical
problems, an office of Students Guidance, Counseling and Placement Bureau functions at
the ground floor at New Administration Building. The Bureau also conducts preparatory
classes, every year, for those who wish to appear in the CSS examinations or to develop
proficiency in the English language.

Discipline Committee
A discipline committee maintains law and order at the campus to ensure a proper
academic environment. The Committee takes notice of the cases of infringement of law
and order, and undesirable activities at the campus, and takes disciplinary action against
the offenders. The Vice-Chancellor is Chairman of this Committee while the Advisor,
Students' Affairs is its member secretary. The Committee meets several times a year to
review the prevailing law and order situation and other related matters and take
appropriate decisions.

Evening Program
The Evening Program of the University of Karachi offers MS, Masters, BS,
B.A./B.Sc.(Hons.), Diploma and Certificate levels. The timings of the program have been
scheduled from 3:30 p.m. In departments where laboratory experiments are involved, it
usual commences at 3:30 p.m. while in others, teaching schedule is decided by the
department's management according to the needs of the courses within the working hours
of the Evening Program. The timings of the program provide an excellent opportunity to
individuals, who are in-service and want to improve their academic qualifications, for
enhancing their learning and career prospects.

During the holy month of Ramdan, the classes remain suspended. There are two
semesters in a year. Tuition fee is charged in each semester. The fee varies from
Rs.13,700/- to 61,000/- per semester for different programs.

Who Should Enroll ?


 All prospective students wishing to join the University immediately to have an early
start of their higher education.
 In-service candidates who are keen to improve their qualifications and skills.
 Female students are encouraged to enroll. Presently, nearly 50% girls are studying
in the Evening Program.
 There is no restriction on the year of passing, but the pre-requisite examination
must have been passed from a recognized institution / University.
 Minimum eligibility for admission is 2nd Division with at least 45% marks unless
otherwise stated. Division Raised, Grace or Condonation marks shall not be
considered. Department & Programs details are laid down in Table I, II & III.

System of Studies
The University follows the semester system. One academic year consists of two
semesters (details available in the Academic Calendar shown at the end of this brochure).

Students admitted in the University have to be conversant with the University rules
and must abide by them.

Rules governing attendance and promotion are of special importance. Under these rules:
1. Minimum attendance requirement to appear in the examination of any
subject/course is 75%. For details please see 'Semester Examination Rules', booklet,
available at the University Book Shop.
2. A student will not be promoted to the next higher class unless he/she has cleared at
least 80% of the courses. This rule is being strictly followed as per decision of the
University's Academic Council.

Instructions for Foreign Students


Foreign students are admitted to this University on nomination from the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Education, Government of Pakistan, subject to eligibility.
Foreign students shall pay the prescribed fee shown in Table-IV.

Admission Policy
Admissions in University of Karachi are given according to merit. However, certain seats
are reserved for dependents of University of Karachi employees, special persons and
Army personnels. For reserved seats also, merit is the only criterion.
Additional five percent (5%) of the seats, allocated for open merit, have been reserved for
applicants who have completed their graduation from other degree awarding institutions,
situated in Karachi and recognized by the University of Karachi.
Note:
Subject to eligibility, admissions on reserved seats for armed forces
are granted through nominations from the General Headquarters.

Admissions on Merit Seats


Since the number of applicants for the Master’s Programs is much higher than the
number of seats available, the admissions have been categorized in three groups i.e. K. S.
and P. Each category is defined as follows:

Category "K”
Category "K" refers to those applicants who have passed their Secondary School
Certificate (SSC or Matric), Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC or Intermediate) or
equivalent, and graduation from the educational institutions, which are situated in
Karachi and are also recognized by or affiliated with the University of Karachi.

Additional five percent (5%) of the seats, allocated for open merit, have been reserved for
applicants who have completed their graduation from other degree awarding institutions,
situated in Karachi and recognized by the University of Karachi.

CATEGORY "S"
Category "S" refers to those applicants who have passed at least one of the certificates:
SSC/Matric, HSC/Intermediate or Bachelor’s degree examinations from a recognized
educational institution in the Province of Sindh (excluding Karachi).

CATEGORY "P"
Category "P" refers to those applicants who have passed at least one of the certificates,
SSC/Matric, HSC/Intermediate or Bachelor’s degree examinations from a recognized
educational institution outside the Province of Sindh but within Pakistan.

Preference in admissions is given to "K" category candidates. If applicants are fewer than
the seats, or if they do not qualify the eligibility criteria, or if the seats are left vacant,
then "S" category candidates are considered. If seats are still available then consideration
is given to “P" category candidates.

Additional two (2%) of the total allocated seats in each department is apportioned for the
dependents (sons, daughters and spouse) of the employees of University of Karachi and
for the special persons. Similarly, seats are reserved for the self-financed candidates

Note: Admissions in the Entry-Test-Based departments will be granted on merit after


qualifying the Entry Test (minimum passing marks is 50%) irrespective of categories.

Admissions on open merit in the University are given strictly as per the above mentioned
criteria of categories.

CHANGE OF CATEGORY (FOR OPEN MERIT BASED


DEPARTMENTS)
Candidates who fulfill the following conditions can apply for change of category from S or P
to K.

1. Those students whose parent (father or mother)/guardian has the domicile of Karachi
but they have passed the pre-requisite examination from abroad that was conducted by
any registered International Institution or any Pakistani Board or University, will have to
produce the domicile certificate and copy of CNIC of their parent /guardian, showing
their permanent address in Karachi.

2. Students whose parent / guardian are employed with Federal or Sindh


Governments, Autonomous or Semi-autonomous bodies, Government Corporations, or
Armed Forces, and who have been posted in or transferred to Karachi during the last
three (03) years (for Bachelor’s program) or five (05) years (for Master’s program) will
have to produce the appointment/deputation/transfer letter and joining letter of their
Parents (father/mother) along with their application. Such candidates must have
completed their further education from educational institutions located in Karachi after
the date of transfer or posting of their parents.

3. Additional three percent (3%) seats in each department will be allocated for those
candidates who have passed their pre-requisite examinations from a recognized
educational institution located outside Karachi but they have their initial education
including SSC/Matric and HSC/Intermediate from Karachi. Such candidates should have
a CNIC and Permanent Residence Certificate (PRC) of Karachi and their parents should
have the domicile and CNIC indicating their permanent address in Karachi. Candidates
below the age of 18 years are required to submit scan copy of their 'B'-Form.

4. A candidate who comes under 'S' or 'P' category, but she/he has got married to a
permanent resident of Karachi should submit a copy of the 'Nikah nama' along with the
domicile and CNIC of his/her spouse showing his/her permanent address in Karachi.

APPLICATION FOR CHANGE OF CATEGORY: (FOR


OPEN MERIT BASED DEPARTMENTS)
All such applicants who fulfill any of the criteria for change of category to 'K' described
above, should attach, with their forms, an application on plain paper for change of
category together with the required documents mentioned above. At the time of
admission, they will have to produce the original and copies of all the documents.

Note: The candidates who are applying only for Test-based departments are not
need/required to apply for change of category.

ADMISSIONS ON SELF-FINANCED SEATS


University of Karachi offers admission on Self-Financed seats as well. Self Finance
amount (per seat) for Masters & Diploma programs is Rs.200,000/-

ADMISSIONS ON RESERVED SEATS


Candidates seeking admission on reserved seats should ensure that they meet the criteria
of eligibility for the University as well as the department concerned.

CONDITIONS FOR ELIGIBILITY


The conditions for eligibility, whether applying on merit or reserved seats, are given below:

Admission in the Faculties of Science, Arts & Social Sciences, Islamic Studies or
Management & Administrative Sciences, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences,
Engineering and Law will be granted as per the eligibility criteria of the department
(Grace/Condoned marks will not be taken into account).

i. A student placed in 3rd division or obtaining less than forty-five percent (45%) marks
in the pre-requisite examination is NOT ELIGIBLE for admission in the University.

ii. A candidate who has already obtained a Master’s degree is not eligible for re-
admission or fresh admission in any Master’s Programs or a candidate who has already
obtained a Master’s degree is not eligible for re-admission or fresh admission in any
Master’s Programs. If any such case is discovered, the student's admission will be
cancelled at any stage of the studies and legal action can be initiated.

iii. Candidates desirous of taking admission on the basis of degrees/certificates awarded


by public sector institutions in Pakistan should get the equivalence of their
degrees/certificates determined by the University Equivalence Committee.

iv. All admissions are provisional subject to verification of documents. Fake documents
and admissions/Inadvertent admission of candidates from non-recognized institutions can
be cancelled at any time.

Procedure of Admission
1. The date of opening of admissions, availability of forms, submission of online forms
and other details are announced through the University of Karachi website
www.uok.edu.pk and www.uokadmission.edu.pk and advertisements in the
newspapers.
2. Application forms will be available on the website www.uok.edu.pk and
www.uokadmission.edu.pk with all the relevant instructions as well as the demo for
guidance of the students. The applicants are required to read the instructions

carefully. In case, if any mistake is committed by the applicant, the University shall
not be held liable for such omission/commission.
3. Applicants are instructed to select departments strictly in accordance with eligibility
criteria listed in Table I for Masters Program, Table II for Diploma Programs and
Table III for Certificates Program. A maximum of five (05) choices of departments
can be given in order of preference. The names of the departments should be
mentioned very carefully since it is not possible to make any changes in the form
once it is submitted.
4. Closing percentages for Masters Admissions 2018-19 are given in Table-V, Page No.
59 respectively. These percentages are only for guidance.
5. A candidate can apply for admission on Open Merit and Test Based Departments
through same online forms, if any candidate submits more than one form for
admission in Evening Program, all of her/his forms will be cancelled.
6. The provisional merit list of successful candidates will be displayed on the website
of the University on the dates mentioned therein.

Procedure of Admission for selected candidates :


The list of successful candidates shall be displayed on www.uok.edu.pk .

Instructions for candidates whose names appear


in the Admission Merit List:
Candidates whose names appear in the admission list must complete all the formalities for
admission within the stipulated time, otherwise their admission will lapse and no claim will
be entertained.
The following documents are required to be submitted for completion of the admission
process:

1. Print out of duly filled Admission Form, online submitted by the applicant.
2. Original Marks Sheet of the last examination i.e. H.S.C./Intermediate or equivalent
for Bachelors and Bachelors /Graduation for Masters Program (non-returnable).
3. An Original character certificate from the Head of the last attended institution. For
external candidates, a character certificate is required from any gazetted officer (non-
returnable).
4. Original and copy of the CNIC of the candidate. In case where the candidate is
below 18 years of age, the original and a copy of his/her parent’s
(father/mother)/guardian CNIC. The original will be returned after verification.
5. The original certificate of S.S.C./Matric, H.S.C./Intermediate, A/O Level and an
attested copy of the same. The original will be returned after verification.
6. Three (3) recent photographs (1x1.5 inch) on a white background.
7. Payment of prescribed Fee. (Table-IV Page No.56 to 58).

Date and Timings of Classes:


a) Regular Classes shall commence from August 21st, 2019.
b) Classes are normally held between 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
c) The University rules regarding the attendance and promotion from one class to another
are the same as applicable to the morning students of the University of Karachi.

Note:
 After completion of admission fee submission for the merit list, candidates who are not
admitted to any department, will be given a choice to apply again online for those
departments where seats are vacant provided that they are eligible and their percentages
fall within the closing percentages of those departments.
 In order to start teaching, the minimum required number of students enrolled in the
program is 35.
 If the minimum number of students does not register by paying the fee in time, the
program shall not be initiated and the fee shall be refunded to the registered students.

Important Note:
Any admission secured on the basis of fake documents or misinformation shall be cancelled
and fees shall be confiscated in favor of the University of Karachi at any stage.
It is to be pointed out that all admissions are provisional and subject to verification of
documents.

Arabic
Introduction
The department of Arabic is enjoying the
patronage of renowned scholars of international
repute. The cautiously designed syllabus has
considered the needs of students and the
contemporary literary world that is a confluence of
ancient and modern Arabic Literature, Language
and Linguistics. Besides academic activities,
co-curricular activities are also stressed like
extension lectures, debates, study tours, picnics
and other events to discover, enhance and polish

Department of Library Science, established in
1956, was the first ever to offer professional degree
in Pakistan. Masters in Library Science (M.L.S.) has

Introduction
The department of Statistics was established in the year
1963. Both in terms of physical facilities and academic
facilities the department of Statistics is one of the most
popular departments within the university.
