Blood Sports

Blood Sport, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, is any sport that involves animals
being killed or hurt to make the people watching or taking part feel excitement. It is not new; in
fact, this entertainment activity has been in practice since hundreds of years and was known as
hunting then. As our society develops, blood sports are seen as a cruel activity to the helpess
animals that are killed. Therefore, I agree that Blood Sports must be banned.

The first reason why activities like this must be banned because it has been associated
with illegal activities. For example, cockfights in which two roosters are placed beak to beak in a
small ring and encouraged to fight until death. As the Humane Society says, “Cockfighting often
goes hand in hand with gambling, drug dealing, illegal gun sales, and murder.”. Although illegal
in 50 states, it still persists across the nation in all sorts of communities among all sorts of
people. As stated in the local news of Miami Herald, April 20th last year on Miami florida,
Miami-Dade Detectives found Jose Raudel Garcia, a cockfight referee, known as "El Ruso" or
"The Russian," slumped over inside the ring found at the west of Hialeah and his body riddled
with bullets. Till’ this day, the murder of Garcia still remains unsolved.

The second reason to ban blood sport is because it is an extremely brutal form of animal
cruelty. For example, Dog Fighting. A brutal sport or contest in which two dogs are placed in a
ring to fight one another for the purposes of entertainment and gambling that dates back to the
1750’s. The fight ends when one dog can’t continue due to exhaustion, injury, or death. Each
year in the US, an estimated 140,000 people and 250,000 dogs are involved in dog
fighting despite the fact that it is prosecuted as a felony crime in all 50 states.

The third and final reason is that it has a negative effect on our minds. According to
Valencia’s Article on World Update Reviews, many behavioral professionals agree with that
viewing blood sports activities on a regular basis promotes violent behavior in human beings. It
has been discovered that youngsters who’re exposed to violence at a delicate age grow as much
as for being insensitive closer to animals and humans. They are compelled to accept those events
and this affects their brain development on a large-scale and such children end up bullies and
often take pride in violent conduct. Many research has located a connection between animal
abuse and domestic violence.

Given the above reasons, we have to open our minds and be sensitive not only to our
fellow human beings but also to animals. On February 11, 1998, the Animal Welfare Act of 1998
(also known as Republic Act 8485) was signed into law by then Philippine President Fidel V.
Ramos. It helps to protect our animals from abusers and give corresponding punishments such as
imprisonment and fines depending on the type of animal cruelty or abuse to whom found guilty.
We are created as an intelligent creature of this Earth to protect other creatures. We can do a lot
things to protect animals and usually it starts in our very home. We must show compassion to
animals that kids will emulate us. Although we can’t control other people activities, being
vigilant to our surrounding can help immediate prevention from harming animals.
