Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTINGS

Introduction

Rape is an illicit and a felonious sexual activity or sexual intercourse by

means of force or with appalling threat against a person or the victim’s will and

capability. It is one of the most relevant phenomenon in the Philippines. Reported

unlawful rape cases ranked third (13.1%) of the total narrated Violence against

Women (VAW) in the said country. The miserable fact is that, the presented data

is not yet factual and a true representation of the issue because of the many

women victims prefer to maintain their silence and avoid their voices to be heard

even by the local authorities (Philippine Commission on Women, 2010).

(Philippine Commission on Women, 2010).

Sexual Assault is the only crime in which the victim becomes the accused

(Adler, 2019). The researchers need to apprise the society to cease blaming the

victims in accordance to their apparel for the clothes and the appearance of the

person harmed has nothing to do with the intended crime. The purpose of this

research is to open the people's eyes and show them the truth about the cruel and

dehumanizing act that up to this date forward still has no solution. The world is no

longer a safe place for us to live in anymore so now, we are here to prove and

show the people that you still have the freedom to express yourself with what you

wear because rape is definitely not about how you dress yourself up and how you

look. At the end of the day, rape is rape (Raphael, 2013).

According to National Academy Press (2014), the best methods for

measuring rape and sexual assault cannot be implemented without separating that

measurement from the measurement of other criminal victimizations.

The researchers dealt with the experiences of rape victims and those

people who have been harmed and harassed reluctantly. This study aimed at

understanding the lived experience of the rape victims and those people who

experienced harassment and then later on being accused for their apparel, clothing

and appearance. This study may serve as a guide to other researchers who will

further analyse the experiences, struggles and the silent battles of the victims.
