Network Topology

Network Topology
• Network topology is a representation, pattern,
or structure or a network that deals with
different types of interconnectivity.

• The physical arrangement of devices on a

network is the ‘network topology’. It literally
refers to how and where equipment is
connected to the network
There are for major Network
Topologies
• Bus
• Ring
• Star
• Mesh
Types of Network Topology
• Bus Topology
A common cable to connect all the computers.
A computer wanting to communicate with
another computer on the network sends the
message to all the computers through the
cable, but only the target computer accepts the
message
Bus Topology
Bus Topology
Advantages
• Easy to use and to understand
• Requires the least amount of cables to
connect together. It is, therefore, less
expensive than other cabling arrangements.
• It is easy to extend a bus; two cables can be
joined into 1 longer cable with a BNC
Disadvantage
• Heavy network traffic can slow a bus
considerably as only one computer can send
a message at a time
• It is difficult to troubleshoot the bus. A cable
break or loose connector all the activity
Activity
• Draw an annotated diagram of each network
topology. Diagrams can literally be boxes to
represent computers/servers or draw actual
devices. Use yarn to represent cables which
connects the computers/servers.
