The Effect of Kpop Music on the Students performance in Music among grade 7 students in the Public

High School

Chapter 1

The Problem and its Background

Introduction

Study skills are acquired through on organized strategic plan to study to prevent the students to fail
(Tahamtani et al., 2015). It is also refers to the process of organizing, taking information, and retaining
information or dealing with assessment in which he can use for studying

Academic performance determines the level of understanding and learning of the students if they
learned or not. Additionally, academic performance is something that the students accomplished in
school through quizzes, activities, and tests.

In order to attain the rapid progress in academic performance, students must seek for excellence.
Excellence in the academic performance is the major goal of any educational institution and society.
Generally, it is characterized by the ability to perform the activities and excel in the scholastic task and
has been identified with achieving high grades and better performance of the students. Academic
excellence is not just having good marks rather it is the development of the students intellectual and
skills to achieve their desired goals and career someday to serve the society and the world as a whole in
the future.

The students who developed, enhanced, and applied their study skills performed well in school.
However, the inability to adapt the study skills can have a negative impact to the students (Jordan et al.,
2015).

In this situation, academic failure is the main problem faced by the student’s teachers, school
administrators and the educational institutions. Although a lot measures are done by the teachers and
school administrators to help the students to improve and enhance the quality of learning and
academic performance, still it was not enough.

Now, the other problem of the students is the effect of media especially in drama and music. Since the
initiation of media, there has been an influx of ways and opportunities for fans to express their
admiration for a popular narrative or text. Fans send fan letters through e-mail, or visit their idols on
shoots and productions. And now especially with the dawn of new media such as the internet and cell
phone, the audience and the fans have a faster possibility to express their thoughts. Through different
media, celebrities and broadcast programs are now more accessible for the fans. It is the same way that
even fans from one country can access media content from another country. The world has become
borderless, and media and fan activities are just two aspects of globalization that brought about the
openness of the world. But Filipino fans of Kpop are not able to visit their favorite Korean stars so they
satisfy themselves with the linked picture, videos, and activities of their idols.
In the Philippines, students were only drawn to Korean music. However they saw the debut of Korean
music videos (MVs) in the Filipino screen. Since then, Kpop as a media content, has become a staple in
the programming of different channels, and created a fandom especially among the Filipino students
fans. Music companies distributed Korean albums in the country, and most of these albums were best
sellers in music stores. From observation, it is clear that Filipino fans join social groups to mingle with
people with the same interest. It is interesting to understand the Kpop wave among Filipino students.
What is the basis for their active consumption of Kpop music? What aspects of Kpop music content
contribute to the Filipino teens’ liking and appreciation? Does Kpop music gratify the various needs of
the Filipino fans which contribute to their usual consumption? Does Kpop affect the studies of these
Filipino fans positively or negatively?
