PHYSICS, UNIT-6 (GRAVITATION)

1.If heavier bodies are attracted more strongly by the earth, why don’t they fall faster than the lighter bodies?
2. The moon has no atmosphere. Why?
3. Earth is continuously pulling the moon towards its centre, still it does not fall to the earth. Why?
4. An artificial satellite revolves around the earth without using any fuel. On the other hand, an aeroplane
requires fuel to fly. Why?
5. The escape velocity for a satellite is 11.2 km/s, if the satellite is launched at an angle of 600 with the vertical,
what will be the escape velocity?
6. Why a body weighs more at the poles than at the equator?
7. If the radius of earth decreases by 1% without changing its mass, will the acceleration due to gravity at the
surface of the earth increase or decrease. If so, by what percent?
8. A tunnel is dug along a diameter of the earth. Find the force on a particle of mass (m) placed in the tunnel at
a distance x from the centre.
9. A particle of mass 100g on the surface of sphere of mass 10 kg and radius 10cm. Find the work to be done
against the gravitational force between them to take the particle away from the sphere.
10. Find the height over the earth’s surface at which the weight of a body becomes half of its value at the
surface.
11. Find the acceleration due to gravity in a mine of depth 6400m if the value at the surface is 9.800 m/s2.
The radius of earth is 6400 km.
12. A satellite of mass 1000 kg is supposed to orbit the earth at a height of 2000 km above the earth’s surface.

13. The radius of the earth is R. If a body is taken to a height 3R from the surface of the earth, what is the
change in potential energy?
14. At what height above the surface of earth, acceleration due to gravity will be 64% of its value on the surface
of the earth?
15.If the radii of two planets be r1 and r2 and their mean densities d1 and d2 then prove that the ratio of
acceleration due to gravity on the planets will be r1d1 : r2d2
16.A body is projected vertically upwards from the surface of earth with thrice of escape speed. What is the
speed of the body far away from the earth ? Given: escape velocity from the earth’s surface is 11.2 km s -1.
17. A particle is fired vertically upwards from earth’s surface and it goes upto a maximum height of 6400 km,

gravitational field and potential due to three masses at the centroid of the triangle.
22. Two bodies of masses 100 kg and 1000 kg are at a distance 1m apart. Calculate the gravitational field
