Robert Hooke
 First to use a microscope to observe cork and coined what he
observe as cells.
 Was responsible for the beginnings of cytology as a subdivision
of biology.

Anton Van Leeuwenhoek (1632- 1723)

 Discovered bacteria and other microscopic organisms in
rainwater and studied the structure of plant and animal cells.
Jean Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Monet (1744-1829)
 Proposed that cells are filled with fluids.

Francesco Redi (1627-1697) and Lazzaro Spallanzani (1729-1799)

 Disproved the spontaneous generation theory

Henri Dutrochet (1776-1847)

 Proposed that cell is the fundamental unit of living organism.
  Proposed that all living things are made up of cells.

Robert Brown (1773-1858)

 Discovered the presence of nuclei within cells.
 Described nucleus as small, dense, round body inserted in a
cell.

Felix Dujardin (1801-1860)

 Noted that all living things contains a thick jelly fluid which he
called sarcode that time.
 Recognized that one-celled organisms are in existence.

Matthias Schleiden (1804-1881) and Theodore Schwann (1810-1882)

 Introduced the concept that all plants and animals are made
up of cells.
Johannes Purkinje (1787-1869)
 Coined the term protoplasm to refer to the living matter of

Max Schultze (1825-1874)

Rudolf Virchow (1821-1902)
 Found that cells divide to form new cells and concluded that
all cells come from pre-existing cells.
