CELL THEORY HISTORICAL TIMELINE ACTIVITY

DIRECTION: Create a Timeline showing the chronological order of these scientists and their
contributions.

Robert Hooke: -He was English physicist who discovered a cell by using an sliver of cork through
a microscopic lens at 1665. He remarked that it looked strangely similar to cellular or small
rooms which monks inhabited. Robert Hooke Discovered a universal joint and balance wheel.
Born at 1635 and Died at 1703. He was employed as chemical assistant by Dr. Thomas Willis.
Hans & Zacharias Janssen: -Hans and Zacharias Janssen are known for inventing the compound
optical microscope. They made it in the 1590's. His contributed to the cell theory by making it
easier and more practical whilst observing cells. Hans Janssen born at 1570 he was the father of
Zacharias Janssen.
Anton van Leeuwenhoek: He was born October 24, 1632 and died August 26, 1723, Dutch
microscopist who was the first to observe bacteria and protozoa. Anton Van Leeuwenhoek
single most important discovery was the existence of single-cell organisms. He reported that he
had observed little animals which is protozoa through microscope. He known as The theory of
spontaneous generation of life.
Matthias Schleiden: A German botanist who with Theodor Schwan, was a cofounder of cell the
theory at 1839. Born at April 5, 1804 and Died at June 23, 1881. He defined as basic unit of
plant structure. He declared that the cell is a basic building block of all plant matter. Schleiden
studied cells as the common element among all plants and animals.
Theodor Schwann: invented with Matthias Schleiden. He was Born at 1810 and Died at 1882.
He also discovered pepsin, the first digestive enzyme prepared from animal tissue, and
experimented to disprove spontaneous generation. Schwann went on and published his
monograph Microscopic Researches into Accordance in the Structure and Growth of Animals
and Plants in 1839.
Rudolph Virchow: A German physician and the father of modern pathology. Rudolph Virchow is
credited with several key discoveries. He was one of the first to accept the work of Robert
Remak, who showed that the origin of cells was the division of pre-existing cells. He was also
known as he said at the Latin word of Omnis cellula e cellula the meaning of that was all cells
come from cells, which he published in 1855.
