Chapter 1
Shorelines
For my investigation of the relation between Auckland and the seaI decided to go with a group of to the Auckland
aqueduct as well as the surrounding area. The reason for this is because it was a great option to really see with my own
eyes to see the relation that sea held with the land of Auckland and how many ways it connects with the land. I decided to
use the style of Idris Khan to act as the lens on how I viewed everything when I was down near the water experiences and
capturing what is front of me from the boats that go land to sea and back to the animals that are part of the connection
between the land and see. I wanted to capture motion in one photograph so do this I thought I would seek out moving
subjects to photograph and take constant shots where I can see that I have successfully capture the essence of the
relation between the rock in which we stand and the deep water we call the sea.

I tried to take as many photographs as I could to really capture what I wanted so that I could later on layer them on top
of each other so that I could achieve the style that Idris Khan which creates a photograph that exists on the surface as a
moment of time but represents multiple moments of time in one photograph. I feel as though that is exactly what I was
going for while I went on my journey to take photographs on the relationship that the sea and land share together. While
I was down, I experienced a range of things happen firstly I saw how the shops and restaurants used the close proximity
to the sea as a way to tailor themselves to the connection of the sea. I saw the same in the animals that were on the
border of the sea and land where they reflected the connection and the more I walked around I saw this though it might
seem obvious I helped me better frame my composition with this in mind while I was getting ready to take a photograph
this evident where I took around 320 photographs in the end but in saying this I felt like I should of taken more to better
understand the connection but I will have to left my mind wonder on this with the hopes of revisiting this in the future.
