3.A small piece of plywood having dimensions 4x2x1 cm is to be heated from 30°C to 200°C in 15
minutes by dielectric heating using 20 MHz supply source. Specific heat of wood is 0.35
calorie/gm/°C and its density as 0.55 gm/°C. Relative permittivity is 5 and power factor 0.04.
Determine the voltage across the work piece and current during heating. Assume loss of energy as
15%. If the voltage is reduced to half, what will be the value of frequency to obtain same heating?
(Hint: 1 calorie = 4.18 J)
4.A three phase arc furnace is used to melt 5 tonnes of steel in 80 minutes. Determine the average
kW and kVA input to the furnace, arc voltage, arc resistance and power factor of the current drawn
from the supply.Following are the given data:
Specific heat of steel = 0.12 kcal/kg/°C, Latent heat of steel = 8.89 kcal/kg/°C, Melting point of
steel = 1370°C, Initial temperature = 15°C, Overall efficiency = 50%, Input current= 7500A.
Resistance and reactance of transformer per phase referred to secondary are 0.002 Ω and 0.003 Ω
respectively. Also determine the time taken to melt 10 tonnes of steel for same energy required.
5.Estimate the rating of an induction furnace to melt two tonnes of zinc in one hour if it operates at
an efficiency of 80%.Specific heat of zinc = 0.1 kcal/kg/°C. Latent heat of fusion of zinc = 26.67
kcal/kg. Melting point of zinc = 555°C.Initial temperature = 35°C. The furnace operates at 20V and
0.6 power factor in secondary circuit when the hearth is full. If secondary voltage is to be
maintained at 20V, estimate the power absorbed and power factor when the hearth is half full.
Assume the resistance of the secondary circuit to be doubled and reactance to remain constant.
