OVERVIEW OF CLW

(CHITTARANJAN LOCOMOTIVE WORKS)

HISTORY OF CLW
 CLW is inaugurated by Dr. Rajendraprasad on 26th Jan,1950.
 Manufacturing of steam locomotives started from 1973.A total
of 2351 locomotives of 5 types were manufactured. The
production was discontinued from 1974 onwards.
 The production of Diesel Hydrolic Locomotives was taken up
during 1968.After manufacturing and and 842 Diesel Hydrolic
Locos of 7 types production of Diesel Hydrolic was discontinued
from 1994 onwards.
 CLW became the first production unit in developing countries,
second in Asia and fifth in the world to manufacture 3-phase
state of the art GTO Thyrister controlled Electric locomotive
and first indigeneous 6000 hp freight electric loco WAG-9
“NAVAYUG” as turned out on 14th November,1998.

MAIN ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS

1.Traction Motor.

There are 2 types of traction motor.

1.Dc Hitachi Motor

2.3 phase ac induction motor.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DC HITACHI MOTOR

There are two parts .

1. Stator.

2. Rotor.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF STATOR.

Stator consists of 6 main poles and 6

compensating poles and yoke.

 Main poles are made of laminated

magnetic material (by entering insulation,
pressing by hydrolic press,machining extra
material,binding ,ovening,taping and
removing air and moisture as well as
improving the insulation in VPI plant).
 Field poles are also made of laminated
magnetic materials through same process.
 Yoke is made of material with high
permeability.
NOTE:
 Both main poles and compoles are
laminated to reduce the eddy current loss
and heating due to it.
 Compensating poles are there to
compensate the flux created by armature to
reduce the armature reaction.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ROTOR.
 Commutator-This consists of high quality
copper 99.9% laminated in insulated by
mica segments.
 Armature- 88 slots,lap winding,back pitch -
10.
 Resistance ring short 2 ends of armature
.This close the magnetic field .
 Equilizer coils are set at the bottom of the
riser portion to ensure that each of the
conductor coils get same voltage to ensure
equal speed of the motor.
 Brush holder rocker ring is used to hold the
carbon brushes tightly on the magnetic
neutral axis. Its movement with respect to
the rotor is arrested by bolt nut
arrangement to avoid high sparkling due to
the shift of carbon brushes from MNA.
 Shaft – one end of the shaft is kept free
another is attached with the wheel to draw
the engine.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF 3 PHASE AC

INDUCTION MOTOR
Advantage of induction motor over Dc motor

 Size of traction motor is less in case of 3

phase induction motor for same output
Power compared to the Dc motor.
 Maintenance cost is less due to absence
of brush gear/commutator.
 Induction motor is robust.
 In 3 phase locomotive full power is
available up to maximum speed where as
the rated power of Dc motor locomotive
reduces beyond the field weakening
range.
 Overload capabilities are more reliable.
 Regenerative breaking is available from
the full speed till dead stop, overall
efficiency is higher.
 3 Phase loco operates at unity pf
throughout the speed range except at
very low speed.

3 PHASE SQUIRREL CAGE AC INDUCTION

MOTOR

 Both stator and rotor is stamped.

 Rotor has total 72 slots and conductors
are set within it.
 Total no of poles are 6.
 Back pitch is 11.
 2 copper conductors (2.23,4.23) are given
9 turns to form the coil where the
parallel arms maintain a gap of 214.6
mm.
 Coils per pole per phase is 4.
 4 coils are connected in series to form 3
north south pole pairs for per phase.
Then these 3 phases are obtained and 9
free ends are shorted to form one
neutral.
 Armature used are of scheme 2 which
has a facility of cooling.
 These traction motors usually run with
frequency range 65-132.Our supply
frequency 50 Hz is converted to that
range by using a converter.
 Rating-850 Kw,speed -1283 rpm,voltage-
2180v,current-270-393 A,65-132Hz.
 There is a important role of VPI plant in
forming the rotor. It is useful to remove
the air and moisture from the gap as well
as for the improvement of insulation.

Some important electrical

equipments
Reverser- Reverser is used in dc traction motor
to change the direction of the current in
magnetic field to run the loco forward and
backward.

Traction braking switch-This connects the 6

fields in series, disconnect the traction motors
and connect the DBR. This switch is applied to
reduce the speed of the loco so that we can
stop the applying the mechanical brake easily.
Braking excitation switch-This is used to
connect the Atfex transformer.

Shunting contactor-This is used to bypass the

current to reduce the flux created by series
field and increase the speed of the loco. There
are 3 or 4 shunting contactors used.

Master controller-This controls the whole

system of traction and braking by the driver
from his desk by only applying the voltage at
pneumatic electric vulb.

SOME IMPORTANT SHOPS WHERE

ELECTRICal EQUIPMENTS ARE
PRODUCED

ERS-59

It is mainly a repairing shop. Here repairing of

welding transformers and motors used in
crane is done.

ELS-19

Here all the electrical equipments are

assembled to loco .Traction motors are
attached with the bogie on the wheel.
