INTRODUCTION
3 phase induction motors on board ships is because of their simple construction and high
reliability in the sea environment and 3 phase induction motor are different applications
and various speed and load requirement. 3 phase induction motors are mostly used for the
industry electric motors. the run in constant speed .etc.
3 phase induction motors has a stator and ROTOR stator carry the 3 phase winding and
ROTOR carry me 3 phase winding and induction motor mechanical energy is converted in
to electric energy.

3 PHASE INDUCTION MOTOR

Introduction 3 phase induction motor

The induction motor are basically AC motors i.e they need alternating voltage for three
operation .

They can operate on there single phase or three phase AC supply and depending on the
types of ROTOR .the induction motor are classified into two point.

• slip ring induction motor.

• squirrel cage induction motor.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE 3 PHASE INDUCTION MOTOR

Construction

• They are two types means part of three phase of induction motor .
• Stator
• ROTOR

2 . It is stationary part of the motor these part is made up of silicon still

staipin
g (think shaft).

• the ROTOR is separate from stator by the air gap of 0.4 to mm and stator is
assembal . the part solts are from on the enter side of stator .the solt be open
type semi open and closed type.
• In this solts a three phase winding made up of copper is
places. This winding may be star or delta connected.
• The three phase of the winding are or taken out truth .the terminal box.
Where three phase AC supply can be connected.
• Types of 3 phase induction motor
• Squirrel case induction motor
• Wound or slip-ring induction motor.
SQUIRREL CAGE INDUCTION MOTOR
Construction of squirrel cage induction motor
Any Induction Motor has a Stator and a Rotor. The construction of Stator for any
induction motor is almost the same. But the rotor construction differs with respect to the
type which is specified above.
squirrel cage induction motor consists of the following

parts: Stator

It consists of a 3 phase winding with a core and metal housing. Windings are
such placed that they are electrically and mechanically 120o apart from in space.
The winding is mounted on the laminated iron core to provide low reluctance
path for generated flux by AC currents

Rotor

It is the part of the motor which will be in a rotation to give mechanical output for a
given amount of electrical energy. The rated output of the motor is mentioned on the
nameplate in horsepower. It consists of a shaft, short-circuited copper/aluminum bars,
and a core.

Fan

A fan is attached to the back side of the rotor to provide heat exchange, and hence
it maintains the temperature of the motor under a limit.

Bearings
Bearings are provided as the base for rotor motion, and the bearings keep the
smooth rotation of the motor.

Squirrel Cage Induction Motor Working Principle

When a 3 phase supply is given to the stator winding it sets up a rotating magnetic field
HYPERLINK "https://www.electrical4u.com/magnetic-field/" in space. This rotating
magnetic field HYPERLINK "https://www.electrical4u.com/rotating-magnetic-field/"
has a speed which is known as the synchronous speed.

This rotating magnetic field induces the voltage HYPERLINK

"https://www.electrical4u.com/voltage-or-electric-potential-difference/" in rotor bars and
hence short-
circuit currents HYPERLINK "https://www.electrical4u.com/electric-current-and-theory-
of-electricity/" start flowing in the rotor bars. These rotor currents generate their self-
magnetic field which will interact with the field of the stator. Now the rotor field will try
to oppose its cause, and hence rotor starts following the rotating magnetic field.

The moment rotor catches the rotating magnetic field the rotor current drops to zero as
there is no more relative motion between the rotating magnetic field and rotor. Hence, at
that moment the rotor experiences zero tangential force hence the rotor decelerates for the
moment.

After deceleration of the rotor, the relative motion between the rotor and the rotating
magnetic field reestablishes hence rotor current again being induced. So again, the tangential
force for rotation of the rotor is restored, and therefore again the rotor starts following
rotating magnetic field, and in this way, the rotor maintains a constant speed which is just
less than the speed of rotating magnetic field or synchronous speed.

Slip is a measure of the difference between the speed of the rotating magnetic field and rotor
speed. The frequency of the rotor current = slip × supply frequency
WOUND OR SLIP RING INDUCTION MOTOR

Construction of Slip ring induction motor:

Stator:

The stator construction is the same for both the squirrel cage and the slip ring induction
motor. The main difference in the slip ring induction motor is in the construction and use
of the rotor. Some changes in the stator can be found when using a slip ring motor in a
cascade system since the supply of the slave motor is controlled by the supply of the rotor
of another slip ring motor with external resistance mounted on its rotor.

Rotor:

Slip ring induction motors usually have a “coiled phase” rotor. This type of rotor is
provided with a distributed three-phase double-layer winding consisting of coils used in
alternators.
The rotor core is formed by steel laminates that have grooves to accommodate single-
phase, 3-phase windings. These windings are placed at 120 degrees of electrical
separation.

working

A slip ring induction motor (a.k.a. wound rotor induction motor) has the main benefit that it
is easier to start than a squirrel cage motor. By putting resistance in series with the rotor
windings, the starting current can be kept low while maintaining good starting torque. As
the motor speeds up, the resistance is reduced until at full speed, it is shorted to zero.
It may also be speed controlled, by recovering the slip power in the rotor through the
slip rings and feeding it back to the supply. This means that the motor can be run at
high slip (slowly) without overheating the rotor windings.

However starting and speed control applications of slip ring motors has largely been
superseded by VFD control of squirrel cage motors. Slip ring motors are now quite rare
and expensive to obtain.
