Lab 2: Defect Finding Tools

EXPECTED OUTCOMES:

 Use Edge, Edge Pair, Edge Width, Bead Finder and Bead Tracker to detect the
appropriate defects

IN-SIGHT FUNCTIONS USED:

 Easy Builder User Interface Application Step 3

– Inspect Part
 Defect Finding Tools
 Edge
 Edge Pair
 Edge Width
 Bead Finder
 Bead Tracker

PROCEDURE:

EDGE TOOL:

1. Create a new job.

2. Load the images for playback from the following location:

 C:\Users\Public\Documents\Cognex\In-Sight\In-Sight Explorer
4.7.0\Sample Jobs\Spreadsheet\InspectEdge\SolarCell

MP 11/21/2015
3. Create a PatMax location tool and train its model around the solar cell to find its
position.

4. Add an Edge defect finding tool and set its region to analyze the left most edge of
the solar cell. Use the dashed yellow as a guide and place it along the edge.

MP 11/21/2015
5. Under the Edges tab, set Caliper Size to 3 so each individual caliper region will be
smaller and detect finer defects. Set the Minimum Contrast to 50 to avoid
detecting the faint vertical lines.

6. Under the Edge Scoring tab, set Edge Transition to Light-to-Dark to detect only a
light to dark transition as the tool inspect from left to right (default value).

MP 11/21/2015
7. Cycle through the images in the folder and verify the default settings for Defects
and Gaps can be used to find Edge related defects.

8. Save the job as MyEdgeDefect.job.

EDGE PAIR TOOL:

1. Remove the Edge defect tool and use an Edge Pair defect tool instead so you can
inspect both sides of the solar cell with a single tool.

2. Under the Edges tab, set Caliper Size to 3 so each individual caliper region will be
smaller and detect finer defects. Set the Minimum Contrast to 50 to avoid
detecting the faint vertical lines.

MP 11/21/2015
3. Under the Edge Scoring tab, set Find Edge Direction to Outside In so the toll will
look from the outside of the region toward the inside. Set both Edge0 and Edge1
Transition to Light-to-Dark so the light to dark transitions are detected when the
tool searches from the outside in.

4. Cycle through the images in the folder and verify the default settings for Defects
and Gaps can be used to find Edge related defects on both side of the solar cell
with a single tool.

5. Save the job as MyEdgePairDefect.job.

EDGE WIDTH TOOL:

9. Create a new job.

10. Load the images for playback from the following location:

11. Create an Edge location tool to find the general position as the part move up and
down. This will be the fixture used in this application.

12. Add an Edge Width defect finding tool and set its region to analyze the left most
edge of the solar cell. Use the dashed yellow as a guide and place it along the
center of the seal as shown below.

13. Under the Edges tab, set the Minimum Contrast to 15 to avoid detecting the faint
transitions, but still pick up on the seal’s transition.

14. Under the Edge Scoring tab, set Find Edge Direction to Center Outward to have
the tool start in the center of the seal and works out. Set Edge0 and Edge1
Transition Light-to-Dark so the toll will only consider light to dark transitions as it
moves outward. Uncheck the Rule: Strongest Edge, check the Rule: Pair Size

option and set the Pair Size to 40 to the tool will prefer those edge pairs that are
closest to 40 pixels apart, but not necessarily the strongest edges.

15. Under the Defects tab set the Min Width to 37 and the Max Width to 43. The
expected size is 40 pixels. This will give the width a +/- 3 pixel tolerance. Any
width detected outside of that tolerance should signal a defect.

MP 11/21/2015
16. Cycle through the images in the folder and verify the default settings for Gaps can
be used to find defects.

17. Save the job as MyEdgeWidthDefect.job.

EDGE TOOL:

18. Create a new job.

19. Load the images for playback from the following location:
 C:\Users\Public\Documents\Cognex\In-Sight\In-Sight Explorer
4.7.0\Sample Jobs\EasyBuilder\BeadFinder

MP 11/21/2015
20. Create a Bead Finder defect detection tool and shape its region as a circle where
its center always lands on the inside of the bead shape as shown below

21. Under the Find Bead tab, set the Find Bead Minimum Contrast to 15, set the Find
Bead Edge Direction to Outside In, and set the Find Bead Edge0 and Edge1
Transition to Light-to-Dark.

MP 11/21/2015
22. Under the Edges tab, set the Minimum Contrast to 50 to avoid detecting the faint
transitions and noise that may appear around the bead.

23. Under the Edge Scoring tab, set the Find Edge Direction to Center Outward, set
Edge0 and Edge1 Transition to Dark-to-Light to detect only a dark to light
transition as the tool inspects from the inside of each caliper outward.

01_2_DefectDetectionTools-Lab.doc 12
MP 11/21/2015
24. Under the Defects tab, set the Min Width to 5 and the Max Width to 18.

25. Cycle through the images in the folder and verify the tool is able to find the bead
each time and also detect defects whre the bead is too thick and falls outside the
tolerance width set in the Defects tab.

26. Save the job as MyBeadFinderDefect.job.
