Cultural Interview Analysis

Rationale: This paper aims to enhance the students’ analytical and critical thinking skills in
evaluating the significance, essence, and content of the interview conducted. This paper
also reinforces the concepts discussed in intercultural communication, focusing on the
socio-cultural dimensions such as culture, gender, age, social status, and religion. The
concepts will be the concentration of the written analysis and will be graded using a
holistic rubric.

Objectives: The learner:


1. Demonstrates sensitivity to the socio-cultural dimension of communication
situation with focus on:
a. culture
b. gender
c. age
d. social status
e. religion
2. Identifies the speaker’s purpose(s).
3. Comprehends various kinds of oral texts.
4. Identifies strategies used by each speaker to convey his/her ideas effectively.
5. Evaluates the effectiveness of an oral communication activity.

MECHANICS FOR MIDTERM REQUIREMENT:


1. It will be an individual paper following the guidelines provided by the teacher.
2. Each group will be assigned an interview from another group.
3. The critical analysis should follow the guide questions given by the teacher and
should be at least a minimum of 500 words and a maximum of 1000, excluding the
title and name.
4. The paper will be graded according to the following criteria:
a. Content and Organization
b. Writing Mechanics
c. Compliance
5. The paper should observe the following format:
a. Double spaced and justified
b. 1inch margin on all sides
c. Times New Roman/Cambria, 11 pt.
d. Name and section on the upper left corner

A.1 Paper clearly provides an overview of the
interview and a comprehensive discussion
of its background.
A.2 Paper states the significance of the interview
i.e. a clear discussion of the relevance of the
interview to the lesson.
A.3 The transcribed interview contains
substantial information about the
interviewee’s cultural background
A.4 Paper is well-organized and includes main
ideas or most important points of the
transcribed interview.
A.5 The transcribed interview shows critical
evaluation of the responses of the
interviewee. The interview is fully explained
and summarized in one’s own words.
A.6 Paper follows an organizational pattern, and
cohesive markers are effectively used for
smooth flow of ideas and easy reading.
B. Writing Mechanics (30 pts)
B.1 Paper is free from verbose expressions and
colloquial language.
B.2 Paper strictly observes proper format and
correct grammar (i.e. spelling, capitalization,
and punctuations are correctly used).
B.3 Word choice is appropriate, and sentences are
well-structured.
C. Compliance
C.1 Paper is submitted on time and all necessary
documents are attached (transcribed interview,
content analysis, and rubric). The papers are
presentable and properly stapled.
