Keynotes of a Speech on Noise Pollution: it’s Causes, Effects

and Control Measures!
Noise pollution is defined as any unwanted electromagnetic (sound)
signal that produces a displeasing effect and which interferes with
human communication, comfort and health.

Causes of Noise Pollution:
Following are the causes of Noise pollution:

1. Occupational or Industrial Noise:

High intensity sound or noise pollution is caused by many machines of
factories, industries and mills.

2. Transport Noise:
It mainly includes road traffic noise, rail traffic noise and air craft
noise. The number of road vehicles like motors, scooters, cars, buses,
trucks and particularly the diesel engine vehicles have increase
enormously which cause a lot of noise pollution.

3. Neighbourhood Noise:
This type of noise includes disturbances from household gadgets and
community e.g., TV, VCR, Radio, Transistors, Telephones, Washing
machines, Vaccum cleaners, mixer etc.

4. Indoor Noise:
It is created in the adjacent room or in the same room where noise is
noticed. E.g., crying of babies, movement of furniture, conversation of
the occupant etc.

5. Outdoor Noise:
It is created from nearby streets. E.g., Automobile traffic etc.

Effect of Noise Pollution on Human Health:

Following are the effects of noise pollution:
1. Noise pollution affects human health, comfort and efficiency. It
cause contraction of blood vessels and make the skin pale.

2. It causes muscles to contract leading to nervous breakdown tension

and even insanity.

3. It may cause damage to heart, brain, kidney and liver and may also
produce emotional disturbances.
4. Loud sound can cause an increased secretion of hormones of
pituitary gland which in turn stimulates the adrenal gland. These
increased level of hormones because various effects like increased
level of blood sugar, suppression of immune system.

5. Auditory fatigue appears in the 90dB associated with whistling and

buzzing in ears. Temporary deafness occurs at 4000-6000 Hz and this
is known as Temporary threshold shift (TTS).

6. Permanent loss of hearing occurs at 100 dB due to continuous noise

exposure.

7. Ultrasonic sound can affect the digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular

systems and semi-circular canal of the internal ear.

8. Brain is also adversely affected by loud and sudden noise, such as

that of jet and aeroplane noise.

9. Even the non living things such as building undergo physical

damage by cracks, broken windows, doors and glasses etc. by sudden
and explosive sounds.

Control Measures for Noise Pollution:

Some of the practices for controlling noise pollution are as
follows:
1. Modifying some of the present practices and procedures in order to
minimize the noise e.g., reducing automobile traffic, outlaying serine,
discouraging stereos without headsets etc.

Shielding the sources of noise generation: For e.g., Use of sound

absorbing motor mountings, better installation, better design, use of
vibration damping or absorbing material in automobile.

3. Shielding the noise receiver: Using ear plugs, ear muffs, helmets
control booths etc.
4. Shifting noisy sources and things away from the people for e.g.,
Isolating airports, industrial complexes.
