LEADERSHIP ESSAY

A leadership skill is needed to build a nation, and Indonesia needs a leader who can make a
better change for the future. Considering to that, I developed my leadership skill since I was a
freshman in bachelor degree. I was active in some organizations like Student Press Organization
(LPM Diagnostika), Student Scientific Organization (LSIM) and Midwife Student Association
(ARMABI) and some volunteer programs. In the second year in university, I was selected as the
head of Journalistic Department and the chief of committee for a national journalistic competition
and in the following year I became the Chief of Student Press Organization. At that time,
journalistic event gained little popularity in medical faculty. Therefore, promoting a journalistic
event for medical student is a big challenge for my team. I managed my team to make an event
that could attract many participants by inviting a famous guest star and make a writing workshop
event for the first time in our faculty. During my era of leadership, my organization’s popularity
has increased than a year before because I manage my team to make many creative and interesting
events for the medical students.
During three years in Midwife Student Association (ARMABI), I got a responsibility as
public relation staff and coordinator for Scientific Midwifery Competition. Besides that, I was
selected as a staff in Scientific Journal Writing for Midwife Students (BIMABI). In Scientific
Student Organization of our faculty I also participated as a public relation staff who was
responsible in promoting the organization. In those organization, my responsibility was to promote
the importance of research and journal writing for college student.
One of my memorable experience as a leader as well as an influencer is when I got a
responsibility to be the chief of committee for community service in a remote village for 30 days
by midwifery students in 2015. Midwifery Department of my university sent my team to analyze
health’s problems in the community. We found that many early marriage cases in the adolescents
as well as lack of participation in Antenatal Care visits of the pregnant women, and a health
government program, named Adolescent Health Care Program (PKPR) was not implemented by
health care providers. For that problems, I divided my team to be some groups in solving health
problems in the community. I managed my team to make some programs about adolescent,
maternal, and community health care to solve their problems which are accustomed to their culture
and their social habits. I felt so grateful that our programs could make a change for adolescent’s
health of the village and increase the number of Antenatal Care Visits for pregnant women.
To sum up, my experience as leader in some organizations and volunteer programs built me
become a person who can lead and manage a team as well as stimulate me to concern about health’s
problems, particularly in midwifery field. I believe my specialty as a leader and an influencer
would fit into the requirement of Chevening scholarship.

NETWORKING ESSAY

Networking is one of my specialty since I was a class president in Senior High School. One of class
president’s task was to work as a liaison and a communicator between teachers and students about
assignment as well as school’s events. In the university, I was active as a public relation staff in two
organizations, namely Midwife Student Association (ARMABI) and Student Scientific Organization
(LSIM). Besides that, I often become public relation committee in some faculty’s events.
As I joined Midwife Student Association (ARMABI) which was a new organization, my task included
of connecting ARMABI with organizations outside ARMABI. I did collaboration with Midwifery
Departments,particularly with the lecturers and stakeholders in both faculty and university. For example,
when ARMABI held a seminar named SERVIX, I became a coordinator to manage the events and choose
the presenters for the seminar.At that time, I had to contact the some presenters who were experts in the
subjects related to the seminar. Moreover, I did a collaboration with lecturers and faculty stakeholders for
selecting the juries for Midwifery Scientific Papers Competition which are included in SERVIX event.In
addition, I became representative of ARMABI in Scientific Journal Writing for Midwife Students
(BIMABI) in related to arrange and evaluate journal writing for Indonesia Midwifery’s Students. While I
was active in Scientific Student Organization (LSIM) in my faculty, I became a representative of LSIM in
promoting the organization to new students.
In my profession internship two years ago,I got a responsibility to be the chief of committee for

Furthermore,I did a collaboration and coordination with public figures of the village, health providers and
health office’s stakeholders (DINKES) in the area to implement our programs.Moreover, we made an
organization structure for Adolescent Health Care Program (PKPR) along with the village teenagers as the
members, in creating a handbook about adolescent health including one-year plan of the organization.In
addition, to increase the participation of Antenatal Care visits, we encourage pregnant women and their
spouses door to door to come to health care or midwife’s clinic for pregnancy routine examination on
schedule.
I realized the importance of networking in human relationship where togetherness within a group or
organization is needed to achieve their future goals. I believe if I got a chance to study in the UK from
Chevening scholarship will play a part in the development of Indonesia’s health sector particularly in
midwifery field as well as the improvement in midwifery’s education curriculum.
CAREER PLAN ESSAY

My immediate plans upon returning home are :

1. I will apply to work as a lecturer in midwifery school. I will share my knowledge and
experience during master study in the UK which has advanced knowledge and skill practice
in midwifery field. I also want to be a part in improving health profession education model
for midwife students adopted from health profession education in the UK.
2. I will join to Indonesia Midwifery Education Association (AIPKIND) to contribute more in
establishing midwifery education by sharing my knowledge and experience during master
study in the UK. In addition, I want to be a liaison between AIPKIND, Indonesia Midwifery
Schools and universities in the UK in collaboration about forming a good and suitable
curriculum for midwifery education
 3. I want to take a major role to develop midwifery research center in Indonesia by conducting
a research in developing midwifery education as well as maternity and newborn health care.
Besides that, I want to use my experience research in the UK for sharing to midwifery
students or Indonesia midwives about how to conduct a good research and write a health
journal properly as well as to publish it nationally and internationally
4. I want to suggest a forming of Indonesia Midwifery Journals Magazine to enhance research’s
atmosphere in midwifery field, concerned to obstetrics and gynecology health issues as well
as midwifery education progress to Indonesia Midwifery Association (IBI)
5. I want to continue my career as a midwife who can serve good quality midwifery care and
maternity model care used by the UK to women, newborn and family in clinical settings in
order to help the government in improving maternal and newborn health care.
6. I plan to make some midwives students groups in online group chat or other social medias
discussing about new innovation and knowledge in midwifery field as well as to encourage
in making research or projects that can be benefit to our profession, and also sharing about
how to pursue a higher study in abroad particularly in health major

My longer term career goals upon returning home are :

1. I will continue my study to higher degree and be an expert in maternal and newborn health
since an expertise in midwifery that comes from midwife background study is rare in
Indonesia
2. I want to invite my colleagues to build a midwifery clinic which can give a good health
service based on the UK model health care with less expensive price or collaborating to
Indonesia Medika (IMED), an organization which give a free health examination using
garbage insurance
3. I want to be a part of government organization which focused on improvement midwifery
care by conducting a high quality research to help the government in achieving their goals
according to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
4. I will be a representative of Indonesia to International organizations which focused on
improvement in Midwifery field particularly on Maternal and Newborn Care

STUDY IN UK ESSAY

Indonesia, a middle-income country, is still fighting in achieving the future goals to improve the
health quality and to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality over the last five years. This goal,
named Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), needs coordination between stakeholders and
health providers especially midwives who work in primary health sector. Therefore, one of
solution to achieve Indonesia’s future goals, is to improve and develop midwifery’s education for
producing quality midwives.
Since 2015, the government has been applied the policy that the minimum education required to
be a lecturer should have master degree. Along with this policy, Indonesia Midwifery Association
(IBI) and the government will make a policy that all practice midwives at least must have a
bachelor degree to continue their career, while most of Indonesia midwives are still diploma
graduate. Therefore, in the next few years, Indonesia needs many midwifery lecturers to meet the
requirement of midwifery education. In addition, research in midwifery field conducted by
midwives are still lacking compared to other professions, most of the research are conducted by
obstetricians or nurses. Moreover, journal publication in midwifery is lacking, because only few
of midwives that can conduct a high quality research and write a journal properly. Therefore, only
few of the midwifery journals are published nationally and internationally.
My study in bachelor of midwifery equips me with strong basic knowledge and skill practice to be
a competent midwife, while my work experience as a midwife in hospital enrich me with clinical
experience about women, newborn and child’s health. I am applying for Master of Midwifery in
the UK which is related to my dream job of being a lecturer, a researcher as well as a competent
midwife. However, Master of Midwifery in Indonesia is only available in two institutions. After I
did a research, I found that both of them have different research’s goals, one of them focused on
biomedical research and the other one focused on reproduction health which is different with my
goal to be a lecturer who is expert in maternal and newborn health.
Continuing study in the UK is my biggest dream since the UK has many universities which are
advance in research and teaching excellence. After I performed a research about the universities, I
want to continue my study in The University of Nottingham which has course namely Midwifery
(MSc) and Maternal and Newborn Health (MSc). My other optional course is Maternal and
Women’s Reproductive Health (MSc) in University of Chester. These courses are fit into my future
goals to be a lecturer and a midwife who is expert in maternal and newborn care which is needed
to produce a high quality midwife. In addition, I believe that my master degree in the UK will
equip me the research experience to help me become a competent researcher in higher degree or
government organizations focusing in midwifery education field as well as developing maternity
model care in supporting the government’s goals for reducing maternal and newborn mortality.
