3D Printing & Additive Manufacturing

...........................................................................................................................................

Overview
The competition in the world market for manufactured services and products has intensified tremendously in recent years. It
has become important, if not vital, for new products to reach the market as early as possible, before the competitors. To bring
products to the market swiftly, many of the processes involved in the design, test, manufacture, market and distribution of the
product have been squeezed, both in terms of time and material resources. They are almost entirely technology-driven,
inevitably involving the computer, a result of rapid development and advancement in such technologies over the last few
decades.

Additive Manufacturing (AM), formerly known as Rapid Prototyping (RP), is one such technology development. AM is defined
by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) as “a process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model
data, usually layer upon layer, as opposed to subtractive manufacturing methodologies”. Also commonly known as 3D Printing
in public literature, this emerging technology is revolutionising the manufacturing industry with its ability to turn digital data
into physical parts. Its distinct ability to manufacture complex shapes and structures has already made it invaluable for the
production of prototypes such as engine manifolds for the automotive industry, and tools such as investment casting moulds in
the jewellery and aeronautical industries. As the technology becomes more developed, additive manufacturing is poised to
move on to the direct production of components and parts. This course will provide a clear and comprehensive coverage of this
exciting new technology.

This course is organized in three modules that should be taken together. The topics in Module A will expose the participants to
design for 3D Printing and AM emphasized. The topics in the module include overview of 3D Printing and AM, preparation of
CAD models, Generation of STL files, calculation of slice profiles, support structure generation and build setup preparation. In
Module B, 3D Printing and AM Processes will be covered. The topics in the Module include vat photopolymerization, extrusion-
based, powder bed fusion, material jetting, binder jetting, sheet lamination and directed energy deposition AM processes. In
Module C, 3D Printing and AM Applications will be covered. The topics in the Module include prototyping and industrial
applications, tooling, automotive, aerospace, medical and dental, toys and gaming, business opportunities and future directions
of 3D Printing and AM.

Course participants will learn these topics through lectures and hands-on experience on 3D modeling and 3D Printing. Also case
studies and assignments will be shared to stimulate research motivation of participants.

Modules A: Design for 3D Printing and AM : June 20 – June 22

B: 3D Printing and AM Processes : June 23 – June 25
C: 3D Printing and AM Applications : June 27 – July 01
Number of participants for the course will be limited to fifty.
You Should  you are a mechanical/production/industrial engineer or research scientist interested in
designing 3D models and fabricating using 3D printing and AM techniques.

Participants from abroad : US $500
Industry/ Research Organizations: Rs. 30,000/-
Academic Institutions: Rs. 10,000/-
The above fee include all instructional materials, computer use for tutorials and assignments,
laboratory equipment usage charges, 24 hr free internet facility. The participants will be provided
with accommodation on payment basis.
The Faculty
Prof. Ian Gibson is in the faculty of Deakin University,
Australia. He is responsible for a number of initiatives
aimed at promoting and supporting 3D Printing (3DP)
research and development. He co-founded the Rapid
Prototyping Journal, which remains the primary
research publication in the field. He co-established the Global Alliance
of Rapid Prototyping Associations, which provides leverage for 3DP-
evangelists around the world. He has published widely, including 50
top journal papers, 3 books and more than 20 book chapters. He is
probably most proud of the Additive Manufacturing book published
through Springer that has been adopted by course managers in many
universities. At Deakin he is extremely excited by the new and
groundbreaking Centre for Advanced Design and Engineering
Training, which aims to revolutionize the way we educate engineering
students and prepare them for the industrial landscape of tomorrow.
His research interests include Rapid Prototyping, robotics, 3D Printing
and Additive Manufacturing.

Dr. Y. Ravi Kumar is an Assistant Professor of

National Institute of Technology, Warangal. He has
been working with 3D Printing for more than 15
years, and remembers when it was called Rapid
Prototyping. He has published more than 35 research
papers in National and International conferences and
journals. He is instrumental in setting up Rapid Prototyping
laboratory at NIT Warangal. He initiated M.Tech Program in Additive
Manufacturing in collaboration with Central Manufacturing
Technology Institute (CMTI) Bangalore, first time in India in 2014. He
is the resource person for various Workshops/STTPs/Conferences on
3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing. He has conducted more than
09 workshops on 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing. He is ASME
recognised speaker in the area of Additive Manufacturing and 3D
Printing. He received “Young Engineer of the Year 2009 Award” from
the Government of Andhra Pradesh and The Institute of Engineers Course Coordinator
(India). His research interest is 3D Printing, Additive Manufacturing,
