Overview
The competition in the world market for manufactured services and products has intensified tremendously in recent years. It
has become important, if not vital, for new products to reach the market as early as possible, before the competitors. To bring
products to the market swiftly, many of the processes involved in the design, test, manufacture, market and distribution of the
product have been squeezed, both in terms of time and material resources. They are almost entirely technology-driven,
inevitably involving the computer, a result of rapid development and advancement in such technologies over the last few
decades.
Additive Manufacturing (AM), formerly known as Rapid Prototyping (RP), is one such technology development. AM is defined
by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) as “a process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model
data, usually layer upon layer, as opposed to subtractive manufacturing methodologies”. Also commonly known as 3D Printing
in public literature, this emerging technology is revolutionising the manufacturing industry with its ability to turn digital data
into physical parts. Its distinct ability to manufacture complex shapes and structures has already made it invaluable for the
production of prototypes such as engine manifolds for the automotive industry, and tools such as investment casting moulds in
the jewellery and aeronautical industries. As the technology becomes more developed, additive manufacturing is poised to
move on to the direct production of components and parts. This course will provide a clear and comprehensive coverage of this
exciting new technology.
This course is organized in three modules that should be taken together. The topics in Module A will expose the participants to
design for 3D Printing and AM emphasized. The topics in the module include overview of 3D Printing and AM, preparation of
CAD models, Generation of STL files, calculation of slice profiles, support structure generation and build setup preparation. In
Module B, 3D Printing and AM Processes will be covered. The topics in the Module include vat photopolymerization, extrusion-
based, powder bed fusion, material jetting, binder jetting, sheet lamination and directed energy deposition AM processes. In
Module C, 3D Printing and AM Applications will be covered. The topics in the Module include prototyping and industrial
applications, tooling, automotive, aerospace, medical and dental, toys and gaming, business opportunities and future directions
of 3D Printing and AM.
Course participants will learn these topics through lectures and hands-on experience on 3D modeling and 3D Printing. Also case
studies and assignments will be shared to stimulate research motivation of participants.
