STANDARD #3

Equity and Cultural Responsiveness

“Effective educational leaders strive for equity of educational opportunity and culturally
responsive practices to promote each student’s academic success and well-being.”

In order to meet this standard, developed and implemented a plan to promote

cultural diversity in Ohio County Schools and at Wheeling Park High School. First and
foremost, having conversations and stepping outside of our comfort levels will promote
cultural awareness. Such things as teacher recruitment, staff development, and
practicing mindful communication can truly make an impact when creating a climate of
cultural diversity. I created goals for a school improvement plan, outlining objectives
and action steps to meet these goals.
This experience was especially beneficial to because being of a cultural majority, I
really never saw the lack of cultural diversity in our schools. It is imperative that our
students feel a sense of belonging in our buildings. Creating a climate of cultural
responsiveness is a must for an effective leader. There are numerous ways we can
implement diversity into our district, buildings, and classrooms. It is up to the school
leaders to ensure this occurs.
I would like to expand my experience with cross-content literacy. Having a
mathematical background, I understand the importance of cross content literacy. I
would like to see how this occurs on a regular basis with other teachers and grade
levels. With the technology provided to our students, I would like to see more
collaboration among teachers and students cross curricular.
