Community of Care and Support for Students

“Effective educational leaders cultivate an inclusive, caring, and supportive school


community that promotes the academic success and well-being of each student.”

In order to meet this standard, I analyzed and compared discipline policies and
guidelines in our student handbook. I determined that the discipline protocol for
violations was effective. I also noted the disciplinary repercussions affecting
participation in school dances and extracurricular activities. Associate Principal
Meredith Dailer has formulated a committee to create a PBIS system at Wheeling Park
High School to acknowledge and reward positive behavior. I also reviewed policy 4373
regarding bullying and harassment. Although the policy does not directly address
lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, it does meet the requirements to protect students
of that category.
I gained a lot of valuable knowledge with this experience. I found a greater
understanding of the discipline policies and procedures performed by disciplinary
principals. When speaking with the assistant principals about this, I understand the
grief they go through when dealing with discipline on a daily basis. To help alleviate
miscommunication, they have created a digital format for the disciplinary referral for
teachers to fill out and submit electronically. Wheeling Park High School has also
purchased new walkie talkies for all staff. Having these walkie talkies gives principals
and staff the opportunity for direct communication when dealing with disciplinary issues.
Creating a PBIS will aid in creating a positive climate at Wheeling Park High School.
I would like to expand my experience when dealing with students of special
populations, such as foreign exchange students. We want all students to have their
needs met and having the knowledge to help these students meet those needs is
something I would like to gain. I would also like to attend professional development to
learn remediation strategies when dealing with student discipline.
