Florida Sea Base

Position Description
POSITION: Divemaster

NATURE OF WORK
The incumbent in this position is responsible for following procedures in making efforts to
ensure the safety of participants in classes, in and around the pool area, the dive boats and all
property of Florida Sea Base. Seeks direction from various supervisors to problem-solve and
promote a team-based environment. Applies policies in a consistent and appropriate manner in
the performance of assigned tasks. Works and provides services safely, ensuring the guidelines
and policies are effectively and politely communicated to guests.

IMPORTANT ROLES
The incumbent in this position must be able to serve in a variety of roles including, but not
limited to, the critical roles outlined below:
Team Member: Performs work in a team-based environment supporting Florida Sea Base and the
BSA mission and the goals, philosophies, and initiatives of their supervisor.
Service Provider: Responsible for setting an example for positive customer service and
professionalism in the workplace. Anticipates and meets the needs of guests, peers and
supervisors by providing assistance in the completion of a variety of tasks and objectives. To
provide this service the individual must be knowledgeable of a variety of areas of operations and
programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The incumbent in this position must be able to successfully perform and is responsible for the
fulfillment of the following essential job functions and duties:
General Responsibilities:
1. Works with other staff in the daily operations and follow-up activities.
2. Attend and participate in all required meetings and trainings
3. Perform related work and special projects, as assigned.
4. Use discretion when discussing personal information that pertains to students and other
guests. This is particularly important when passing information regarding accidents and
incidents.
5. Arrive to work on time and ready to perform job duties. Quitting time is when all evening
programs and other jobs are completed. All jobs are a team effort.
Instruction:
1. At all times adhere to Florida Sea Base, BSA and PADI policies, procedures and ethics.
2. Perform all duties in a professional manner that includes appearance, communications
and interaction with guest and other staff.
2. Understand the importance of personal equipment needed for scuba diving and
snorkeling. Be able to transfer this knowledge to students and guests and assist students
and guests in the proper selection of equipment.
3. Use sound judgment during instruction and when taking students into an aquatic
environment. Consider weather, sea conditions, student’s abilities and group size when
making judgment decisions.
4. Assist participants in obtaining rental equipment prior to water activities. Show proper
use of equipment and proper cleaning procedures prior to returning equipment.

5. Never leave or abandon participants while in the water. Divemasters should be first in the
water and last out. Indirect supervision of participants should be used with careful
discretion.
6. Remain with participants the entire time during boat trips out to and returning from the
dive sites. Do not retreat to the bridge for talks with other crewmembers unless to discuss
information pertaining to the safety and welfare of students or other guests.
7. Use discretion when discussing student’s performance and abilities with other staff.
Never discuss student’s personal information with anyone unless there is a direct need to
know.
8. Wear proper Florida Sea Base assigned uniform.
Rental Room
1. Fill scuba cylinders and follow proper and safe scuba cylinder filling procedures.
2. Assisting boats in leaving and returning to docks.
3. Distributing rental equipment to participants, cleaning and maintenance of rental
equipment
4. Removing trash to dumpsters.
5. Compressor maintenance including fluid level checks and adding fluids.
Boat Duties
1. Conducting proper roll calls and informing passengers of safety rules.
2. Assisting customers onto and off of the boat while on the reefs and the docks.
3. Physically able to monitor the immediate dive site, and pull a drowning victim from the
water.
4. All employees working on the boats are subject to random drug testing as required by the
US Coast Guard.
NOTE: Any employee directly responsible for leaving a guest at a dive site will be
immediately separated from employment with Florida Sea Base.

6. Ability to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine circumstances and in
critical situations.

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS AND FORMAL TRAINING


This position is considered “safety sensitive” because the incumbent is responsible for making
efforts to ensure the safety all guests as a regular function of his/her duties. Current certifications
are required:
1. Divemaster from agency recognized by the WRSTC Note: This job description is not intended
