Contest Theme: Waste to Wealth to Wonder.

PRODUCT NAME: MINI PAPER RECYCLER.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:
Today paper production in the industry is affecting the environment in an adverse way.
Almost 40% of the paper pulp is created from wood and in this process deforestation occurs
on a large scale.

Energy requirement for the production of fresh paper is way more (31% approx.) as
compared to recycled paper.

The use of Landfills as well as wastes in the water and air will reduce considerably.

CONCEPT IDEA OF THE MINI PAPER RECYCLER:

The major sources of waste paper are:

1. OFFICES
2. HOMES

If this waste paper from homes and offices can be recycled, a major portion of the waste
paper from the environment can be removed and utilized in a better way.

But, instead of recycling the paper through paper mills, we have come up with a device
which can recycle paper on – site whether at homes or offices without any hassle and in an
environment-friendly, cost effective manner.

The device will not require the use of any skilled-labour and thus, a hassle free recycle of
paper would attract larger audiences and deforestation and other harmful effects on the
environment as stated above can be reduced.

1
WORKING OF THE PRODUCT:
The Mini Paper Recycler would carry out its recycling process in the following way:

RAW PULP INK REMOVAL &

MATERIAL PREPARATION
PREPARATION BLEACHING

(CUTTING/
CHIPPING,
SCREENING)
FINAL PRODUCT NEW STOCK
PREPARATION

The device would consist of three main units along with the power unit.

The Three units are:

1. THE SHREDDING UNIT

2. THE DE-INKING UNIT
3. THE PRODUCT PREPARATION UNIT.

As the objective is to recycle paper on-site, the size of each unit is kept as small as possible
without reducing the effectiveness.

The brief working procedure is as follows:

1. The paper to be recycled is shredded using either crusher fans or shredding blades.
2. The shredded pieces of paper are then sent for the de-inking process, using regular
salt solution.
3. After addition of sufficient de-inking solution, the new stock prepared is heated
using ULTRAVIOLET HEATERS.
4. The heating of the stock helps in blending the fibres and use of starch solution helps
in strengthening the paper.
5. The final product unit may consist of either rolls for preparation of products like
toilet paper, or frames --- where the stock would be injected and allowed to dry for
the production of office papers.

Chemicals used:

1. Salt complex: NaHCO3 + NaCl+ Bleaching powder

2. Resins from vegetable waste.

2
THE POWER UNIT:

The main objective is to reduce the use of electricity. Therefore, the energy required by the
motors and drives used in the device is reduced considerably by the use of gears. Thus, even
low cost solar devices can be used as a source of power supporting the idea of using
renewable energy sources.

WHAT MAKES OUR PRODUCT STAND-OUT FROM THE REST???

The idea of Paper recycling is not new. But, what makes our device amazing is its focus on a
complete green process of operation, on-site use and cost-effectiveness.

SOMEOF ITS DISTINGUISHING FEATURES ARE:

1. COMPACT SIZE: We plan on recycling paper on-site, not in any industrial

environment. This will help in the promotion of the idea of recycling used paper as
the process of paper recycling in industry does not provide good success rates as
only a few per cent of the paper waste generated is being properly recycled.
2. SKILLED --- LABOUR: The product can be operated even by a layman, eliminating the
necessity of using skilled labour in industries. Thus the overall cost of recycling
comes down. Organizations using this device can even meet their environmental
commitments as a part of their CSR policy.
3. GREEN OPREATIONAL ENERGY: Use of solar power as well as salt water and resins
from vegetables as a source of chemical, makes the entire process green and is one
of the most innovative and distinct feature of this product.
4. AUTOMATION: Use of Infrared Senors to make the entire process of recycling
automatic once the initial raw material has been supplied to the device, reduces
manual labour and makes it user-friendly.
5. DEFORESTATION: The ultimate goal of the product is to decrease rates of
deforestation and we are sure of achieving this objective, if this product works
according to its potential in the market.
