Eligibility

[Candidates, who wish to pursue Aerospace Engineering, should have passed

Higher Secondary Board exam from a recognized board in India with Science -
Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry with 50 percent]

T
o become eligible for admission to B. Tech/BE in Aerospace Engineering
courses in IITs, NITs and IIITs, candidates should have scored at least 50%
marks with Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry as compulsory subjects in
10+2. Thereafter, the eligible candidates need to qualify JEE (Main), and
subsequently JEE Advanced, for admissions to IITs. Regional institutes have their
respective State-level examinations for admitting students.

The IITs and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are among the premier
institutes that offer M. Tech courses in Aerospace Engineering. Some Institutes also
offer postgraduate (M Tech) and Doctoral (PhD) programmes in Aeronautics post
bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering. For M. Tech/MS degree course, can-
didates are selected on the basis of GATE score. However, candidates with excep-
tional performance in their qualifying degree are also eligible for direct admissions
depending on the admission criteria of the respective institutions. Many engineer-
ing colleges also offer M. Tech/MS programme in Aerospace Engineering with dif-
ferent specializations.

[The course content for Aerospace Engineering is primarily designed for those
students who are interested in analysis, design, and operation of aircraft and
space vehicles]

A
s a branch of engineering, Aerospace Engineering focuses on manufac-
turing, planning, maintaining and designing of aircrafts and spacecrafts.
Though a general perception is that both Aeronautical Engineering and
Aerospace Engineering are same, but in reality both are quite different.

Candidates interested in pursuing a career in Aerospace Engineering have two

options after class 12th, undergraduate programme of four years’ duration (BE/B.
Tech) and dual degree programme of five years’ duration. The subjects that form
core of the Aerospace Engineering programmes include:
l Introduction to Electrical and Electronics Circuits: In this module, basic knowledge
about electrical and electronic circuits imparted to the students.
l Introduction to Engineering Design: Importance is given on the series of steps used
by engineers to create functional products and process.
l Solid Mechanics: As a branch of continuum mechanics, it studies about the
behavior of solid materials.
l Introduction to Numerical Analysis: It is concerned with the development of
algorithms for solving all kinds of problems of continuous mathematics.
l Thermodynamics: As a branch of physics, it is concerned with heat and temperature.

[If you have a successful Aerospace Engineering degree in your pocket, literally the
world is at your feet]

Job Prospects
With the increase in popularity of air travel and space, the need of professional aer-
ospace engineers is increasing. In the field of design of satellite, air and space vehi-
cles, and missiles, the role and importance of aerospace engineers have become
very vital. The job prospect for Aerospace Engineers in India is bright.

Aerospace engineers are in high demand in the field of designing of new prod-
ucts, including missiles, rockets, military & commercial aircraft, remotely piloted
planes, drones & helicopters and spacecraft.

Over the last couple of years, India has emerged as the world’s largest arm buy-
ers from major defence manufacturers such as USA, Israel, Russia, UK and France.
The Ministry of Defence has taken various initiatives to make a significant growth
path in the defence sector. The initiatives taken by the Government of India include
increase in FDI, delicensing of non-lethal and dual use items and a declared
export strategy. With the announcement of “Make in India” campaign, sectors like
defense and electronics manufacturing have picked up momentum. Since 2001,
the defence sector was officially opened to the private sectors. The Indian industry
is in favor of the move, and more oriented to repeat its success in areas like space,
atomic energy and automotive sectors. To establish a modern defence industri-
al complex, FICCI has been engaged in continuous dialogue with the Ministry
of Defence. The present scenario shows a bright job prospect for the Aerospace
Engineering professionals.

mission to live and work in space make aerospace engineering one of the most
sought-after specialized engineering programmes]

A
degree in Aerospace Engineering opens a new avenue for career pros-
pects. This degree is not confined within national territory; it also opens
up new international career prospect. Jobs for aerospace engineers are
available with national, international, public and private Airline services
and aircraft manufacturing companies. There are a lot of job opportunities for aer-
ospace engineers in countries like USA, France, UK and Germany. Even in NASA,
you can find a good percentage of Indian as well as foreign aerospace engineers.

The salary structure of an aerospace engineer varies from country to country.

To determine lucrative salary also depends on various factors, including experi-
ence, expertise, domain specific knowledge and location. In case of the USA, start-
ing salary of an aerospace engineer is $66,110 per year. An experienced aerospace
engineer in the USA earns $105,380 per year. The top 25 percent of aerospace
engineers in the USA earn $130,260 per year and the top 10 percent of aerospace
engineers in the same country earn $155,240 per year. In case of the UK, the aver-
age salary of an aerospace engineer is £30,697 per year. The entry-level aerospace
engineers in UK earn £29,000 per year and the middle level aerospace engineers
earn £36,000 per year. If you have more than 10-20 years of experience in aero-
space engineering, you can earn £41,000 per year in UK.
