Construction of Vented Dam at Mulikkaru in Dharmastala village of
Belthangady Taluk,Dakshina Kannada District.
GENERAL REPORT

1. General:

The proposed work is to be taken up for supplementing the water

requirement of Dharmastala. It is proposed to construct a Vented Dam across the tributory
of Netravati. This will be located near village Dharmastala in Belthangady Taluk of Dakshin
Kannada district.
The site has a good catchment. The construction of Vented Dam,is a
requirement of pilgrims visiting the temple town and also the local farmers. This will facilitate
better irrigation facilities for the agriculture lands and provide perennial water for drinking
purpose.

2.Location
The project lies in the Southern part of the Karnataka State in Dharmastala village
Dakshina Kannada District in Belthangady Taluka near the west coast. The quality of water
is potable. The site location is fixed in consultaion with engineers and the reconnaissance
survey conducted.

3. Proposals:
It is proposed to construct a vented type submersibleVented Dam across tributory
of Netravati River near Dharmastala village so as to augment drinking water in summer
season.
The water stored in this barrage will be conveyed for drinking water purpose. The
water stored in the barrage is not allowed to be lifted by the pump sets by Ryots of both the
banks on upstream of proposed barrage. The excess water let out will join Netravati in the
downstream side of Dharstahal town. This will help farmers in supplementing their
agriculture farming from this project and also help in recharging the ground water.

4. Availability of Water:
The water required for the lean period for this project is proposed to be stored during
Jan and Feb as assured storage is otherwise it is not available during March to June. There
is a small flow in the nala during almost all the months of the year. However it is found that
sufficient water is not available during summer season.

5.Topography and Geology:

The area is part of Malnad .The topography is undulating and rocks are exposed in
many locations. The bed is not uniform. Many large ditches are present in the river bed and
the lean flow meanders along these pits. The banks are full of forest areas with
jungles. There is mini Hydel project on the upstream side about 3 km.The re is gradual slope
for 3 km and a sudden drop afterwards.Hence the site is located at the end of flat length
before the drop. This location has a good exposed rocky strata and slightly wider. This will
help in reducing the afflux.

J. M. S. P. L. Dharwad
The area is completely rocky strata with good foundation but there ae lot of cracks in
the rocky foundation and the starta has fractures. These are likely to be disturbed during the
blasting and make the foundation pervious.Hence Consolidation grouting and curtain
grouting are proposed in the estimate.

6. Storage Details:
It is proposed to store water for a height of 7 mtrs in the barrage and is estimated to
store 0.55 Mcum.

7. Utilisation:
The water in the barrage is proposed to be stored during availability of water in
theRiver. About 0.55 Mucm will be stored at FRL.

8. Construction Details:
The foundation of 2 m depth is proposed and designed to be embedded in hard
surface. The length of the Barrage will be 87.1 m
It is proposed to provide Main R.C.C. piers of 5.3 m x 0.9 m x 7.5 m size with 2 m
wide vents and the vents are proposed to be closed by M.S. gates in 7 units. The wing walls
with returns are proposed to avoid the erosion of banks.
There are 30 vents provided which are 2 m wide and will be closed with M.S.Gates
during the late monsoon period. The required embedded parts, gates and lifting arrangement
provisions are made in the estimate.
The piers of 0.9 m width and 5.30 m length are provided to support the Gates and
Bridge on the top.5 m wide submersible bridge is provided to faciliate movement of
people,to remove, stack and store MS Gates when not required.
The abutment adjacent the Piers will be the end support for the barrage. This is
provided up to 0.5 m above Crest of Barrage. The wing walls are provided for a length equal
to height of barrage on upstream side and twice the height on the downstream side. The
apron with appropriate thickness are provided on upsteam side and downstream for a
length equal to height of barrage and twice the height of barrage for downstream apron.

The foundation of barrage is maintained at a depth of 2 m.This is verified for the

stability of pier under critical conditions and provision for reinforcement is made accordingly.

Further keywalls are proposed on both side of structure on right side and also on
on left side in accoradance with the height of water storage .

J. M. S. P. L. Dharwad
9. Materials for Construction:
The materials such as metal, rubble, sand etc., are available. The necssary lead has been
provided. The cement and steel will be brought from the taluk head quarters.

10. Schedule of Rates:

The rates as per M. I. Zone Bengaluru DSR for 2018-19 are adopted in the estimate and the
esimated cost is Rs 1569.0 Lakhs.

11. Benefits and Justification:

The water stored will be utilised for the benefit of pilgrims and town citizens of Dharmasthal.

The discharge in the river at a RL of 56.7m HFL is 1667.19 Cumecs which is more than the maximum flood
discharge by Ryve's formula. Hence the HFL and the width of barrage adopted is safe.

Scour depth

The design for calculation of scour depth due to water flowing in the river is calculated as below.
D = 0.473 Q/ 1/3 ( ) f= 1.00 for normal sand
f
= 5.64 m
U/S Cutoff wall
Upstream scour depth is taken as 1.5 times the normal scour depth from HFL level
Dmax for U/S = 1.5 x 5.64
= 8.46 mtr

The RL of upstream cutoff wall is (HFL - Dmax) for U/S or 0.6m in hard rock whichever is lower
Bottom RL of Upstream cutoff wall = 54.70 - 8.46
= 46.24 mtr
Provide upstream cutoff wall upto RL 46.20
Height of cutoff wall = Sill level - Bottom RL
= 47.70 - 46.20
= 1.50 m
Provide Height of U/S cutoff wall= 2.0 m
Provide cutoff wall thickness = 0.50 m in M20

D/S Cutoff wall

Downstream scour depth is taken as 2 times the normal scour depth from HFL level.
Dmax for D/S = 2x 5.64
= 11.28 mtr
Bottom RL of Downstream cutoff wall = 54.70 - 11.28
Provide downstream cutoff wall upto RL 43.42 mtr
Height of cut off wall = Sill level - Bottom RL
= 47.70 - 43.42
= 4.30 mtr
Height of D/S cutoff wall = 4.30 m Say 4.30
Provide cutoff wall thickness 0.5 m in M20 m

TABLE-III.Calculation for discharge under free overfall condition
The discharge over the crest of gates leads to free overfall condition. This occurs when the discharge in the
parent river flowing at crest level is allowed to spill over the crest under closed condition of gates. This is critical
condition for evaluation of barrage structures.

Discharge over barrage crest
The discharge over the barrage crest is also given by the following formula(as per Hydaulics by Lewitte)
Q = ((0.45 + (0.00984/h)) x Sqrt(2g) x L x h3/2 (units are FPS)
Assume ha= 4.60 m or 15.09 ft
L= 88.00 m 288.71 ft
Q= 61216.18 Cusecs
= 1733.43 Cumecs > 1695.39 Cumecs
Hence the depth of flow is 4.6m under Free Overfall Conditions.
Hence, the depth of water flow over the crest is 4.60 m under free overfall conditions.

The velocity at the sill level of the barrage is calculated as below
Vthe = Sqrt( 2*g (H+ha/2)) 13.51 m/sec
