Assignment 2

1. The Second and Third law of Thermodynamics

Second Law of Thermodynamics states that the state of entropy of the entire universe, as an isolated
system, will always increase over time. The changes in the entropy in the universe can never be negative.

Third law of thermodynamic states that as the temperature of a system approaches absolute zero, its
entropy becomes constant, or the change in entropy is zero. It predicts the properties of a system and the
behavior of entropy in a unique environment known as absolute temperature.

2. Real life application of the Second and Third law of Thermodynamics.

2nd Law of Thermodynamics

A cup of tea going cold

Wood burns into ash

3rd Law of thermodynamics

Used to calculate absolute entropies and chemical affinity of substance

Utilized in adiabatic cooling or cryogenics.

3. Definition of Entropy

Entropy is also a measure of the number of possible arrangements the atoms in a system can have. In
this sense, entropy is a measure of uncertainty or randomness.
4. Table of Standard Entropy
5. Table of Gibb’s free energy
