Learning Objectives:

 Explain the second law of

thermodynamics and its significance
Let us think . . .
A glass of cold water is
placed in a sealed room.
After an infinite amount
of time, what will
happen?

o The water will warm and the air in the room will
cool, until they are the same temperature
o The air will cool to the temperature of the water
o There is insufficient information to solve
o The water will warm to the temperature of the
air
o Both the water and the air will remain the same
temperature, unless an outside force is applied

Second Law of Thermodynamics
- The Second Law Of Thermodynamics states
that closed systems constantly move towards a
state of thermal equilibrium.
- Heat flow happens when a hot object transfers its
heat to a cold object.

Second Law of Thermodynamics
- The Second Law Of Thermodynamics also
explains the relationship between entropy change
and spontaneity of a process.
Second Law of Thermodynamics

Entropy – means disorder, or randomness, of a

system
Low Entropy – organized
High Entropy – disorder, disorganized

Irreversible Process and Entropy
In science, a process that is not reversible is called
irreversible. This concept arises frequently in
thermodynamics.
Second Law of Thermodynamics

- The arrow means irreversible, the direction

toward disorder.
- In irreversible direction, the entropy will
increase over time, and become more disorder
- In the Second Law of Thermodynamics in a
closed system, entrophy will never decreased

Irreversible Process and Entropy
In science, a process that is not reversible is called
irreversible. This concept arises frequently in
thermodynamics.
A system that undergoes an irreversible process may
still be capable of returning to its initial state.
However, the impossibility occurs in restoring the
environment to its own initial conditions. An
irreversible process increases the entropy of the
universe.
The second law of thermodynamics can be used to
determine whether a process is reversible or not.
