A. Before Watching:

1. Do you believe that the earth is warming? Why?

Blatantly speaking, if vast majority of actively publishing climate scientist, 97% in the latest
consensus, says that the Earth is indeed warming and humans are greatly responsible, there is no reason
to dismiss it so. So yes, I believe that the earth is warming and primarily because these scientists are not
people who are proclaiming something as factual without backed up by any studies and evidences.
These are people whose literal expertise is on studying our planet’s climate conditions. Trusting to the
conclusions they draw over the “opinions” of people who deny it, is the best option to take.

One can also easily educate himself/herself as to why climate scientists came up with their
conclusion that there is a global warming and that human activities have a big part in causing it. It only
takes one search in Google to be greeted by humanity’s main contribution to this climate problem. The
emission into atmosphere of carbon dioxide, methane, and other gases the humans are heavily
producing, causes heat to be trapped from the atmosphere which contributes to the warming of the
Earth.

2. Do you believe that Man’s anthropogenic interest is causing this warming? Why or why not? Cite
specific examples.

Man’s anthropogenic interest is causing a huge deal in global warming. To cite just a few
examples are enough.

 Fossil fuels are extracted and used for particular benefits. Such as oil for transportation, natural
gas and coal for electricity. But the utilization of these fossil fuels, more so in wide-scale, cause
immense amount of carbon dioxide to be released into the atmosphere.

 To satisfy the demand for palm oil and capitalize on it, large companies continue to cut down
trees to establish oil plantation. These trees help in absorbing carbon dioxide and thus cutting
them down release a decade of stored carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

 We savor the taste of beef but this is also the very reason why the production for beef is
promoted. And the problem with that is when cows chew their food, they release methane in
which a single molecule is equivalent to 23 molecules of carbon dioxide. That significantly
impact the warming of the globe. In addition, they take up way bigger space of land than land
needed for chicken, potato and rice combined.

C. After Watching:

1. What are the key points of the movie?

Before a flood is a documentary movie starred by Leonardo DiCaprio. Some important key points
made are as follows:

1. A Reminder of the manifestation of humanity’s negligence on the perpetual use of fossil fuel. It
includes the extreme weather patterns, acidification of oceans and rivers, more droughts in
places that are already too hot and such events that we experience today.
2. To vote for politicians who truly understand the consequences of continuous human activities
that contributes to global warming and are genuinely concerned in solving the problems.
3. An advocacy to change our lifestyle. To make a gradual dietary transition from beefs, which is
the one of biggest contributor of methane, towards other alternative options. Or at least
minimizing beef production and consumption.
4. Promotion to the use of renewable resources. Building of solar panels and use of batteries
instead of coal and natural gas to power up electricity. The transition from petroleum-based cars
into electric cars
5. To alert us that we are all have a part in combatting this problem and it’s not just on the hands
of the government or some large companies.

If before we keep mining for coal, drilling for natural gas, pumping out crude oil, burning these
fossil fuels while ignorant to what problems it can bring to us, today we know. Still, we keep doing the
exact same thing with only the advancement in extracting these fossil fuels has changed. This is not a
concern of ignorance anymore(welp to some degree maybe), this is negligence.

2. What do you think will be the consequences of climate change? (Choose any 2 key points on
Biodiversity, Food Security, Energy Consumption, Technology: GMO and Nano)

Consequences on BIODIVERSITY

Changes in biodiversity means changes in lifestyle of everything that has life. The changes in the
environment brought by climate change will have the animals force to migrate and adapt to a new
environment they can suitably live in. This means that plants that has no means of migrating would die
and go extinct if they only exist in one particular place. And if an animal is able to migrate but unable
adapt to their new surroundings like the new temperature, new dietary options, new food competitors
and new predators, they would also die leading to the inevitable extinction of their species. One
extinction of species will also cause a domino effect. If say plants which is a primary food for many
herbivores can’t survive the new climate, carnivorous animals will also get affected.

Consequences on FOOD SECURITY

Climate change will hit food security immensely. Because of the increase in droughts, flood,
extreme weather patterns and such as, farmers will have a hard time growing crops leading to potential
food shortage. Shortage in food supplies will also mean a spike in food prices which may lead to a
possible starvation of many.

3. Suggest ways you believe may be effective or can help combat or mitigate climate change.

Most of I can suggest are the ones that are already suggested from the documentary movie. So
it’s more of a promotion than a suggestion. I think we should make it a goal for an eventual transition to
electric cars, minimizing beef consumption and broaden our diet, vote for politicians who acknowledge
global warming and are dedicated in putting the burning of fossil fuels into limit and are willing to put
proper restrictions concerning forest deforestation. Carbon taxing should be implemented like in
cigarettes for example in order to discourage people from not only actively destroying their health but
also from being a contributor of carbon dioxide emission. Educating the uneducated about global
warming would also help.
