On August 11th, we celebrate Student’s Day in Brazil.

This
commemoration has taken place since 1927 and had as its
starting point something that happened a hundred years
earlier, that is, in 1827, at the time of the newly established
Brazilian Empire. On August 11, 1827, the then emperor
Dom Pedro I authorized the creation of the first two
Universities of Brazil, the Olinda Faculty of Law in
Pernambuco and the Largo do São Francisco Faculty of
Law in São Paulo. For this reason, on August 11, is also
celebrated the Lawyer’s Day in Brazil. Brazilian students had been active in
politics since before the country had become independent in the late 1780s.
