Retail reimagines possibilities
When Samira fled to Lebanon, the last thing she expected to find was a best
friend and a way to build a business. At a time when tension was increasing
between Syrian refugees and Lebanese citizens, these two women reached out
and formed a friendship. Samira was struggling to make ends meet as a
hairdresser so, together, Samira and Souad took out a loan from Kiva and started
a wedding-dress rental business that helped Samira double her income. Best of
all she found not only a friend, but someone she considers family.

Energy in unexpected places
When most look out over the Manhattan skyline, they don’t see an opportunity
to grow fresh food for people in the city. But Katrin and Keely do. In order to
turn their passion for urban agriculture into a reality, they needed financial help.
That’s where Kiva came in. With their loan, they were able to start Tinyfield
Roofhop Farm, a greenhouse where they grow micro-greens, salad greens,
and hops on a rooftop farm in Brooklyn. As for the future, the horizon—and all
its rooftops—is their oyster.

Finance comes full circle
Lindiwe remembers going to school in rural Zimbabwe, without shoes and
without a pencil or pen to write with. Through hard work and business savvy, she
started making her own juice to sell to laborers at a mine nearby. Thanks to a
loan from Kiva, her business grew quickly, from 20 liters a week to 200. Now she
runs three businesses, has her own savings account, and volunteers as a mentor
for young women in her community. She loves helping girls stay in school, and
she’s a role model for how women of any age can achieve their dreams.

Education beyond the classroom
Jean Pierre has always wanted to help people. But in the Rwanda villages where
he went to school, his options were limited. Without access to a computer,
getting through his school courses wasn’t easy, and his career opportunities
were slim. With a loan from Kiva, he was able to buy a laptop that helped him
finish his courses at the university and go on to achieve what he never thought
possible: starting a logistical operation. Today, he uses his laptop to work at a
mission-driven organization that helps others in need.

Manufacturing gets personal
Mukula’s saris are bright and vibrant—ruby red, deep turquoise, and sapphire
blue. Today, Mukula employs two skilled workers to help with her weaving
business. But as a former child bride, she didn’t always have this kind of help or
opportunity. Thanks to a loan from Kiva, however, she has been able to buy more
yarn wholesale, grow her business, and cut down on expenses so she can save.
Mukula’s hope is to provide a better future for her two sons and build a new
house that will accommodate her whole family.
