CONCEPT NOTES
A short story is a short work of fiction that can just be read in one sitting. Short stories have a few
characters, singular complication, and are ascribed to be thematic. Also, they, in effect, propel an intellectual
and affective response to the readers.
Elements of a Short Story
*Character: A character is a person, or sometimes even an animal, who takes part in the action of a short
story or other literary work.
*Setting: The setting of a short story is the time and place in which it happens. Authors often use
descriptions of landscape, scenery, buildings, seasons or weather to provide a strong sense of setting.
*Conflict: The conflict is a struggle between two people or things in a short story. The main character is
usually on one side of the central conflict.
*Theme: The theme is the central idea or belief in a short story.
*Plot: A plot is a series of events and character actions that relate to the central conflict.
Elements of Plot
a. Exposition: This is the part that sets the mood of the story wherein characters, setting and
background are being introduced.
b. Rising Action: It is the part of the plot that marks the onset of the major conflict in the story.
c. Climax: This is the part that builds the highest tension and considered to be the story’s highest
point of interest.
d. Falling Action: This marks the revelation of the characters leading to the revolution of the
story’s main conflict.
e. Denouement: This is the final resolution and outcome of the story.
Characteristics of a Short Story
• A short story should create a single impression.
• It should be highly economical with every word, all characters, dialogue and description designed to
develop single predesigned effect.
• Most short stories revolve around a single incident, character or period of time,
• Should be capable of being read at one sitting.
• Opening sentence should initiate the predetermined or predesigned effect.
• Once climax reached, the story should end with minimal resolution.
• Character should only be developed to the extent required by the story.
TASK 1: Directions: Read the article on pp. 89-90. Answer the ff. questions on p. 91.
TASK 2: Directions: Read the story of Dahong Palay in front of the class. Answer the following
questions after reading and discuss the answers with the class. SEE PAGES 91-99.
GROUP ACTIVITY: The students will be divided into 4 groups.
Group 1: Draw a plot diagram of the story discussed. RUBRIC:
