Problem Set T.H.M. VERGARA

General Directions: Write your answers in blue books using black or blue non-erasable ink only.
Write your section and class number on the upper-right hand corner of the front page of your blue
book. Show all necessary solutions and box all final answers. Work independently.
I. Write TRUE if the statement is correct. Otherwise, write FALSE. (1 point each)
1. If x ∈ R such that |x + 3| < 2, then x > −5.

2. The graph of x2 + y 2 + 6x − 8y + 24 = 0 is a point.

b
3. If r and s are the roots of the quadratic equation ax2 +bx+c = 0, where c 6= 0, then r−1 +s−1 = − .
c
4. A line ` in the Cartesian plane has equation ax + by + c = 0, where a 6= 0 and b 6= 0.

5. Points A(1, −6), B(4, −4), and C(7, −2) form an isosceles triangle.

II. Do as indicated. (3 points)

1. Find the equation of the circle with center (2, −1) and passes through (3, −5).

2. Find the equation of the line that passes through (−1, 4) and perpendicular to y = 4x + 3.

3. Give the equation of the perpendicular bisector of the line segment with endpoints P (−1, 2) and
Q(4, −1).

4. Find the solutions of |2x + 7| = 3.

5. The force of attraction between two lovers on the surface of the emotion is directly proportional
to the product of their romantic mood but inversely proportional to the square of the conflict
between them. What will happen to the attraction between the two lovers if their romantic mood
are doubled and their conflict is also doubled?

III. Consider the line ` : y = −x − 1 and the parabola P : y = x2 − 2x − 3.

1. Determine the intercepts of ` and P. (3 points)

2. Find the vertex of P. (1 point)

3. Algebraically, find the intersections of ` and P. (4 points)

4. Graph ` and P on a single cartesian plane. Label important parts of the graph such as intercepts,
vertex and points of intersection. (2 points)

IV. Find all COMPLEX SOLUTIONS of the following: (5 points each)

√ √
1. x − 4 + 3x − 8 = 2.

2. 3(x − 1)−4 − (x − 1)−2 − 2 = 0.

x x+2
3. ≥
x+3 10
V. Solve the following problems completely. Define all variables used in each problem.

1. How much 85% alcohol solution must be added to a 50 ml. 50% alcohol solution to make a 75%
solution? (3 points)

2. It will take three hours for slug A to crawl from its house to the house of slug B. The speed of
slug B is 60 m/hr more than the speed of slug A. If they leave their houses at the same time and
crawl toward each other, then they will meet exactly one hour later. Find the distance between
their houses. (4 points)

3. At 1:00 pm, Jon Snow opened Pipe A to fill an empty tank with water. Two hours later, Renly of
House Baratheon opened Pipe B which also fills the tank, but accidentally opened Pipe X which
drains the tank. At 4:00 pm, Loras of House Tyrell closed both Pipes A and B. With Pipe X left
open, the tank was completely drained at 6:45 pm. If Pipe X alone can empty the full tank in 5
hours, while Pipe B alone can fill up the empty tank in 4 hours, how long will it take to Pipe A
alone fill up the empty tank? (5 points)

4. Given points P (−2, 1), Q(0, 6), and R(−5, 1), where must point S be located so that quadrilateral
P QRS is a square? Find the area of square P QRS. (4 points)

5. A rhombus is a parallelogram with all four sides equal in length. Use analytic geometry to prove
that the diagonal of a rhombus are perpendicular. (4 points)
