COMPARISION OF JIS G3101 WITH ASTM A36 – MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF JIS G3101:2010

Extract from JIS G3101:2010:

It may be observed that the JIS G3101:2010 code itself does not mention a SPECIFIC value for
the carbon content. However, a source from the internet mentions the range of % of C to be
between 0.12 – 0.22.

(C & Mn % MENTIONED ABOVE FOR JIS SS400 NEED TO BE RE-CONFIRMED)

Extract from JIS G3101:2010:

It may be observed that the % Carbon content for non-temperature resilient steels like ASTM
A36, IS 2062 Gr.A/B, is of the range 0.22-0.23. Hence we may purchase the steel of SS400
grade with an assured Carbon content of 0.22%.

Selection of Impact Test Temperatures:

Extract from IS2062:1999

The last sentences regarding Temperature of Impact Test suggests the logic that a guarantee of
impact properties shall be ensured at the minimum possible temperature to which the steel
structure is exposed.
Extract from IS2062:2006

Note#2 above clearly mentions that the temperature of the impact test shall not be specified in
any code and is left to the discretion and rationality of the engineer.

CONCLUSIONS:

 Steel of SS400 grade with an assured Carbon content of 0.22% may be purchased as it is
the key factor which influences the temperature resilience and yield strength (mechanical
parameters) of a steel grade.

 The guarantee of impact properties shall be ensured at the minimum possible temperature
to which the steel structure is exposed. Of course this proposition has a certain amount of
risk involved in it as there is no surety that the purchased steel sections shall pass the
impact tests at the required temperatures.
