Students whose native language is not English
may pronounce the sound /i/ as /ee/. Give students
opportunities to practise correct pronunciation with
matching pairs of words eg sit and seat, bit and
beat, mitt and meet.
Extra assistance
Students who use a language other than English at
home may have learnt a different set of graphemes
before coming to school. If the Roman alphabet is
new to them, the idea of lower case and upper case
or capital letters may be new to them too. Be sure to
stress the differences between them.
