The electrohydraulic power steering (APS) control unit (A73) is part of
the electromechanical controller unit, which is mounted to the steering
gear.
Task
The electrohydraulic power steering (APS) control unit (A73) uses the
manual torque on the steering wheel and the steering angle, both of
which are recorded through the steering angle and the steering torque
sensor (A77), as well as the vehicle speed from the drive control (CPC)
control unit (A3) and the wheel speeds from the Electronic Brake
Control (EBS) control unit (A10b, A10c), which are received over the
exterior CAN (CAN 1), to calculate the supporting initial torque, which
is to be supplied to the complete steering column system through the
electromechanical controller unit, and realizes this through
corresponding actuation of the electric motor.
The electric motor and the worm gear located on it can be used by the
electrohydraulic power steering (APS) control unit (A73) to increase
the steering gear's output torque or to reduce the control force on the
steering wheel to match the speed, to actively return the front wheels
to their straight-ahead position (active axle return), and to counteract
the manual torque on the steering wheel (electric steering limiter).

Each use of the electric steering circuit is monitored by the
electrohydraulic power steering (APS) control unit (A73). Here, it
checks, in particular, the frequency in which the electric motor is
operated and the torque involved. This data provides information on
any possible wear to the worm gear.
The electrohydraulic power steering (APS) control unit (A73) also
constantly monitors the function of the electric motor and the steering
angle and steering torque sensor (A77), as well as the plausibility of all
the signals. In the event of a fault, it authorizes actuation of the
corresponding warning messages in the instrument cluster.
The same occurs when the center position of the steering gear and the
steering limiter is not set, e.g. after replacing the steering gear or the
electromechanical controller unit. In this case, a yellow warning
indicator is activated. This only goes out again when the center
position and the steering limiter have undergone teach-in using
XENTRY.
