For the majority of companies challenges are required to make virtual teams succeed.

Businesses that don’t face challenges are less likely to grow. This is because, with no

obstacles it might be difficult to visualize how a company can improve and individuals can

increase their self-confidence. Facing difficulties at certain stages in life, can make a person

become stronger and be prepared for future obstacles that they could face in an environment

where working virtually can be unpredictable, especially when team colleagues cannot see

when others are working, situations such as individuals working on their own, lack of real

communication with others and not participating in social interactions, is considered a

challenge.

For example, team leaders that work within a virtual team may have difficulty in knowing if

their employees are actually working, or not,. As DuFrene and Lehman (2011, p. 20) states

virtual teams groups might have difficulties at working to understand, motivation and trust

while working online. However, these kind of challenges are an essential requirement for a

business to achieve their expected goals, because motivation can easily build a level of trust

within team members that work in a virtual context, making them gain confidence to succeed.

According to Wankel and DeFillippi (2014, p. 171) challenges while working virtually, can

be a motivation for individuals to work together to overcome difficulties, and this

motivation enhances stronger relationships with peers and employees, because they are

working together to acquire more knowledge and experience to overcome challenges to

complete different tasks. Some factors that cause challenges at virtual work, are related to

time and distance, principally because members of a group live in different locations, have

different schedules, and work in different styles.

One member can be sleeping, another in a different time zone can be working.. and also

culture can be a challenge, when working together within a virtual team. Varying

interpretations of tasks can become an obstacle. It’s a challenge to know if an employee is

managing to work efficiently online when being in another location. Companies have to be

aware that challenges are required to make a success of the business using virtual teams

and professionals start to trust and have more awareness and understanding others with the

ability given by use of technology enabling work to be perform effectively enabeling the

company to succeed.

For some companies that have been succeeding overcoming challenges while working

virtually, hindrances such as lack of not establishing real conversation can sometimes create

misunderstanding between peers and employees. According to Ashmore, (2012, p. 18)

communicating, by using email, wasap, chat, makes virtual work more effective. However,

for some individuals, the act of not having face to face contact in a real environment, can

make it difficult to understand others emotions in Virtual communication. The ability to

understand messages correctly can be sometimes difficult. Messages can have another

meaning. For Example, when people communicate by using messages, e chat, people are not

all aware that everyone is thinking on the same level and the required message might be

interpreted differently. Individuals at the time of writing something, particularly if there is

emotional content can be interpreted in the wrong way. According to Sheridan (2012) Steve
Cardigan vice president of people operations at LinkedIn, states, that allowing employees to

work from any place has some positive impacts, because it can allow employees more

flexibility. For example on some occasions it might be difficult to get into the office for

personal reasons, however, the employee is still able to work efficiently although doing so

remotely. The company being international, can provide tasks online to employees living in

different locations around the world. Time pressure, and distance are considered a challenge,

and employees working virtually need to be well informed to prevent misunderstandings.

Therefore, this explains why the challenge to perform good communication must be a priority

to make this business succeed. Another example.

According to Fang (2007, p116-121).Increasing competition at TeleCo, has made employees

work under pressure developing quality products on time , because of the competition in the

marketplace. The company found that the biggest challenge for them was in schedules and

management of time to market. Therefore team members had to drive solutions

communicated through electronic devices. However, it was difficult for some team members

to communicate well. For example Wajid, and Christine from the Canada team , states that

email messages were not coherent, so it was difficult for them to interpret what had to be

completed. Therefore, team members have to be aware of their responsibilities in completing

their work in a virtual environment, this is significant because if they are still part of the

team working towards the completion of project they need to overcome difficulties of

distance, and time lines. As Aldag, and Kuzuhara,(2015,p.276) mentions, solutions must be

found in the use of technology, good motivation and communication between peers and
employees, are vital to enable professionals, and the company itself to achieve its virtual

goals, to succeed.
