WORKING IN BUSINESS PORTFOLIO PART B INTERPERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this portfolio is to reflect on how I evaluate my interpersonal effectiveness. I will
firstly reflect on my interpersonal effectiveness, analysing my strengths and weaknesses while
working in my team mates. Later on, I will discuss how my experience was when working in group,
this had given me the opportunity to improve the way I work with others. Reflecting on this
experience, I will discuss the critical incident that occurred using managing team conflict based on
Tuckman team development model, to provide a clear understanding of how my interpersonal skills
while working in teams can be developed, and how some efficient strategies by using smart goals can
be formulated to enable team member to achieve their desire objectives.

2.0 INTERPERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS

According to Ellis (2009, p. 25). People who develop good interpersonal skills have the ability to
understand their internal and external qualities, abilities, and weaknesses, to enable them to
understand and comprehend others. This means that when people develop interpersonal skills it
allows individuals to reflect on what things they are good at and what they need to work on, so as to
enable people to achieve their future goals, in a team environment.

STARP TEMPLATE
Diary Reflections

I had the experience of working in a team during the last four weeks
related to BSD124 working in business’s oral presentation. I found that
S = situation
this was useful because I learned from others. For example, I share
context/background knowledge with my group and by doing this activity; I understood
furthermore the importance of interpersonal skills at working with others.
However, the critical incident related to BSD124 oral presentation was
related to how my group move through the different stages, that Tuchman
(as cited in Bonebright 2010, p. 114, 5), describes “forming, storming,
norming, performing, and adjourning”. Where understanding team
development was a challenge to me, because at the beginning, we shared
too much information on what to do that at the end it was difficult to
come to a conclusion and make agreements as an individual on diverse
roles and responsibilities while working as a group.

I was required to research on a topic on work health and safety for

T = task Rainbow Coloured Clothing. Since I had to work as a team to do an oral

presentation I also had started the power point presentation, trying to
completed it, doing the reference list. Where once that I completed this,
I sent to my A and D, to improve their own slides.

In our first meeting we already knew each other, so it was easy for us to
communicate, In our second meeting we were ready to start to work as a
A = action
group. However, even we start to take action to work in our oral
presentation our time management was not as effective as we wanted.
This is because, from the beginning we spent too much time on clarifying
our topic, sharing ideas and doing research. At the end we were all
unsatisfied with the way we work because our oral presentation was not
discussed on that day. Therefore to solve this incident, I decided to start
doing the Power point presentation because although we shared
knowledge on workplace health safe and safety, I was not convinced that
we have achieved our targets.
