HOT- IN – PLACE RECYCLING of Bituminous Roads:

TERPL Ltd – is a company that is floated with the express purpose of Recycling the Bituminous Road
surface In-Situ.

The technology addresses the need to reduce the use of costly Bitumen and Stone Aggregate both
finite natural resources and one of them a derivative of Oil for which India is a net Importer. This
impacts the cost of refurbishment of a 40/50 mm Bituminous Wearing Course. The technology is
better suited for Highways.

Our technology is to heat the road, remove the distressed road surface( a process called scarifying or
milling), leave it on the road itself, bring fresh minimal rich asphalt mix or add some rejuvenating
agent to the milled road on the road itself, mix it, relay it, roll it and let traffic flow over it in double
quick time. The schematic diagram of the process is below.

Direction of Motion is from right to left for the machinery. The heating takes place on a distressed or a
refurbishable candidate road, the material is Milled and Mixed by adding Rejuvenating media or fresh
Mix and then paved and rolled in the normal fashion. Delivering a good quality, durable, and paved
road.

The machinery used for the work is as shown below in the form of a train.

We are happy to advise you that the Delhi PWD after having tried the process on one of the roads as
a Pilot Project was suitably impressed to float fresh tenders for almost the entire Ring Road in Delhi
and we have won this contract on an open tender basis. The work has since then been finished.

Post success of the HIR process, GMR tried it out on their NH 45 Tindivanam – Tambaram section in
2013 where we delivered excellent results – a comment from the IE was that there is no difference
between the conventionally laid surface and Hot in Place Recycling.

We have conducted Hot in Place Recycling as on date on over 2.0 Million Sq. M of NHAI BOT
Concession Highways or PWD Roads. We are currently conducting HIR on NH 45.on Tambaram to
Tindivanam stretch for GMR.

The concept is specified in the Yellow/Orange Book on the Specification of Road and Bridge Works ,
Revision 4 and Revision 5.

The advantages of the process are:

Environmental Benefits

Resource Preservation - you recycle so you don't use large quantities of Bitumen or of
Aggregate,

Energy Preservation - you recycle so you need to use less energy to heat and mix in a Hot
Mix Plant

Engineering Benefits

Preservation and correction of Road Geometry - elements of profile correction to ensure flow
of water off the road to drains

No increases of heights of the road - yielding more savings in the preclusion to raise and add
to road furniture, central verges etc.

Process increases rutting resistance and ensures resistance to scuffing and ravelling etc.

Durability of road surface since the road is heated and hence the mix is at optimum
temperatures

Quality Control

Integrity of Hot Mix is maintained through out the process yielding durability of road surface

Superior ride quality is delivered since process facilitates better densification of the road mat

Less user delay as roads can be delivered as it cools

Better ride quality

Improved speeds of delivery (road refurbishment ).
