Performance Specification of High Modulus

Modifier
1. Introduction
High modulus modifier is a kind of asphalt and asphalt mixture additiv
e which is compounded by a variety of high polymers and can improve the b
earing capacity of asphalt pavement. It can make the dynamic stability of
ordinary asphalt concrete reach more than 10000 times / mm, which meets t
he domestic and foreign high modulus asphalt concrete technology system.
The appearance of high modulus modifier is pure black granular solid. It
can greatly improve the high temperature stability, water stability and l
ow temperature crack resistance of asphalt mixture through the multiple f
unctions of viscosity increasing, reinforcement, filling, asphalt modific
ation and elastic recovery of aggregate surface.

3. Products Composition

High modulus modifier is a kind of granular material which is process

ed by a variety of polymers and resins through special technology. The sp
ecific components are listed as follows:

4. Mechanism of action
A. Aggregate tackifying effect: the high modulus modifier is mixed with th
e aggregate first, and partially melted on the surface of the aggregate, w
hich improves the cohesiveness of the aggregate.
B. Modified asphalt function: high modulus modifier partially dissolves o
r swells in Asphalt during transportation of wet mixing mixture, forming
cementation, so as to improve softening point, increase viscosity and red
uce heat sensitivity.
C. Fiber reinforcement: the microcrystalline zone formed by high modulus m
odifier polymer is partially drawn into fiber during mixing, and the fibe
r reinforcement is formed by bridging and crosslinking in the aggregate f
ramework.
D. Deformation recovery function: the elastic component of high modulus mod
ifier has the function of elastic recovery of deformed part of pavement at hi
gher temperature, thus reducing the permanent deformation of formed asphalt p
avement.

6. Product use
High modulus modifier joins the asphalt mixture, which is mainly used
in the middle and lower layers of the road pavement (especially in the ca
se of the middle surface layer) to significantly improve the modulus of t
he asphalt mixture, thus improving the high temperature stability (high t
emperature rut resistance) and fatigue resistance, and improving the wate
r stability and low temperature crack resistance of the mixture.
7. Scope of the applicable roads

8. Application technology of high modulus modifier in asphal

t mixture
During the pavement construction, the product dosage is 0.2% -0.6% (w
eight percentage) of the asphalt mixture. According to the best economic
consumption ratio of high modulus modifier particles determined by the te
st, while adding 180℃ -190℃ aggregate to the mixing pot, a certain amou
nt of high modulus modifier is directly added to the mixing pot. The dry
mixing time of the high modulus modifier and the aggregate is not less th
an 10 seconds, so that the high modulus modifier is evenly dispersed into
the mixture, and then, a certain amount of base asphalt is added and wet
mixed to get the asphalt mixture of pavement
9. use of high modulus modifiers
 Manual metering additive (the mixture production volume should be used hourly)
 Automatic metering additive equipment (large mixture production capacity or suitable for
large engineering projects)

10. Packaging, storage and transportation of products

The product is packaged in a composite kraft paper woven bag or a composi
te plastic woven bag, with a net weight of 25KG (per bag that can be custom
ized according to the user's use). The mode of transportation is the genera
l cargo transportation.
Avoid sun exposure and rain during storage and transportation.
Products shall be stored in room temperature and dry warehouse.
The validity period of the product is 36 months from the production date.
If the technical indicators of the product beyond the validity period meet
the requirements, they can still be used.

1. Summary of high-modulus modifier mixture
With the economic development, road traffic, especially the increase o
f heavy vehicles and the use of high pressure tyre tires, and the lasting
summer heat weather, rutting has become one of the main forms of early dam
age of road asphalt pavement. Especially on the highway with long steep sl
opes and more sharp bends, the heavy car driving speed is slow, and the lo
ad of the vehicle acts on the road for time, which is prone to serious rut
damage. Ruts not only deform the road and damage the flatness of the road,
etc. High-speed vehicles will drift when the water in the rut groove, caus
ing driving danger and seriously endangering driving safety. At the same t
ime, the ruts deepen, which makes the steering wheel difficult to control
and increases the risk of driving.
At a certain temperature and loading rate, the greater the viscosity o
f the asphalt, the greater the viscosity resistance of its asphalt mixtur
e. The stronger the shear deformation ability, the better the rut resistan
ce of the asphalt mixture. Domestic and foreign studies show that for the
same deformation, a high modulus asphalt mixture requires much greater ext
ernal power than a low modulus asphalt mixture, i. e., a longer load durat
ion at greater wheel load pressure or the same wheel load. The modulus of
asphalt mixture is proportional to the rut resistance of asphalt pavement.
The higher the modulus of asphalt mixture, the stronger the rut resistance
of the paved asphalt pavement. Therefore, improving the modulus of asphalt
mixture is an important means to solve the problem of road vehicle remova
l.
Under heavy traffic conditions, the modulus of asphalt mixture should
be improved: modified asphalt (such as PG 76 or PG82) with high PG perfor
mance grade; second, "high modulus modifier" product is directly added to
ordinary asphalt mixture; the third is to add fiber material (the effect
of this method is not obvious). In recent years, the method of directly i
nvesting "high modulus modifier" to improve the modulus of ordinary aspha
lt mixture has received wide attention.

2. Characteristics of high modulus modifier and its ad

vantages compared with modified asphalt
Adding a high modulus modifier to the ordinary asphalt mixture can s
ignificantly improve the high-temperature performance (high-temperature ru
t resistance) and fatigue resistance, and improve the water damage resista
nce and low-temperature cracking performance of the asphalt mixture.
The high modulus modifier is directly put into the mixing pot for mi
xing with the aggregate, without the need to add special equipment, thus e
liminating the reaction equipment, shear equipment and development equipme
nt needed for the production of modified asphalt. It has the advantages of
small energy consumption and relatively low cost to avoid the risk of segr
egation due to modified asphalt and unstable storage.
With high modulus modifiers, the grading of the asphalt mixture is n
ot changed at any mix, only to fine tune the asphalt ratio. The high modulu
s modifier is put directly into the mixing pan, by only slightly extending
the mixing time and increasing the construction temperature (up to 5℃ bel
ow the construction temperature of the SBS modified asphalt). Mixing, pavi
ng, rolling and other processes need not be changed.
High-modulus modifiers are highly bonded to the aggregate, without r
equiring adhesive and anti-stripping agents. The amount of SBS modified as
phalt in asphalt mixture has the maximum limit, that is, we cannot rely on
increasing the amount of SBS modified asphalt to improve the modulus of th
e mixture, while the high modulus modifier can adjust the mixture accordin
g to the modulus value required by the asphalt mixture to meet the mixture
modulus required by different road conditions.
Convenient construction and energy saving.

4. product dosage
The dosage of high modulus modifiers is determined by laborat
ory tests to meet the strength modulus requirements required for
highway asphalt mixtures.

It can be seen from the test data in the table above, that the
rut resistance of the mixture is significantly improved by adding
a "high modulus modifier". After the addition of 0.3% and 0.4% hig

According to the JTG F40-2004 standard requirements of the Min
istry of Communications, the water stability of the asphalt mixtur
e adopts the pre-post splitting strength ratio before freezing and
thawing. It can be seen from the data above that the absolute valu
e of the cracking strength and the residual strength ratio of the
mixture with high modulus modifier have been significantly improve
d, so the water damage performance is very good.
Low-temperature crack resistance

The low temperature performance of the asphalt mixture refers

to the ability of the asphalt mixture to resist the low temperatur
e shrinkage crack at the low temperature in winter. The Chinese sp
ecification is characterized by the destructive strain obtained by
the low temperature bending experiment. According to the JTJ 053-2
000 standard of the Ministry of Communications, the experimental r
esults are as follows:

It can be seen from the above table that, after adding the hig
h modulus modulator, the bending tensile strength and strength mod
ulus index are reduced, but the range is not large, and the bendin
g strain index does not change much, indicating that the high stre
ngth asphalt material has no adverse effect on the low temperature
performance of the asphalt mixture.
