TWO SPEED MOTORS
On some applications there is a matter of necessity to have two optional running speeds on the hydraulic motor.
Bauer Hydraulics motor types HMJ, HMH and HMK can be delivered as two-speed motors. Bauer Hydraulics use two
different principles to obtain the two speed/torque function. One by moving the slide valve spindle (HR12) and the
other by disconnecting cylinders through a circulation valve (HR14 and HR22). All cylinders are engaged when running
at slow speed/ high torque, and some cylinders are disconnected when running with high speed/low torque.
Standard speed/torque ratios obtainable are as follows: 6/3, 9/3, 9/6,14/7 and 18/9. When other speed/torque ratios are
required, please contact us. The ratio 8/4 is infrequently used. Running a motor on 4 cylinders gives a very uneven
torque and angular speed (see diagram page 19.) This might cause uncontrolled vibrations. The circulation valve can also
be used for free-wheeling. In this case, cylinders are disconnected, e.g. 7/0, 9/0, 14/0, 18/0

HMJ and HMH motor with two-speed slide valve HR14
By using the slide valve HR14 we obtain a very smooth changing of speed/torque, even when the motor is loaded and
running. By this arrangement the cross-connected cylinders are emptied and drained to tank, hence we avoid
overheating the oil.

FLOW/LEAKAGE DATA FOR TWO-SPEED MOTORS
The below diagrams show the total pressure drop in the motor measured between the outlet- and inlet ports. The HR12
slide valve has two outlet- and inlet ports. When all ports are used, the pressure losses are reduced approx. 25%.
The above curves show the total pressure drop for HMJ9-5.9 with slide valve HR12.
The above curves show the total pressure drop for HMJ9-5.9 with slide valve HR14.
The above curve shows the total pressure drop for HMK18-32.6 with slide valve HR22.

EFFECT OF PULSATION ON STARTING AND RUNNING TORQUE
The most distinct characteristics given by the above curves are that odd-number cylinders in general have a much
smoother pulsation then even-number cylinder. A pulsation of 29,9% as illustrated in curve for four cylinders is
regarded to give too high vibrations. Consequently, four cylinders are not recommended.
The curves are based on the Bauer HMH motor with cylinder diameter ø145 mm and stroke 110 mm.
0° 45° 90° 135° 180° 0° 45° 90° 135° 180° 0° 45° 90° 135° 180°
0° 45° 90° 135° 180° 0° 45° 90° 135° 180° 0° 45° 90° 135° 180°
Starting torque is dependent on the cylinders starting position. Low starting torque will occur when the cylinders are
positioned at an angle corresponding to the low- and sharp bottoms of the pulsation curves.

SERVICE LIFE OF THE MOTOR
Experience shows that the limiting factor in the lifetime of a hydraulic motor is the bearing life of the roller bearings on
the shaft. The estimated bearing life is calculated according to the standard formula issued by the bearing producers.

INTERNAL PRESSURE LOSSES IN MOTORS AND SLIDE VALVES
Boost pressure
When the motor is working as a
pump (i.e. overrunning loads) it is
important that the motor is supplied
with sufficient oil to avoid cavitation.
The necessary feed pressure at the
oil inlet can be estimated from the
below pressure loss graphs. The
minimum inlet pressure should be 1,6
times the pressure taken from the Using two inlet and two outlet ports A, Aʼ and B, Bʼ the pressure
graphs, + the pressure in the motor difference is reduced approximately 30% on the 500 l/min slide valve.
casing (drain pressure). Two outlet- and inlet ports are standard features on 9 cylinder motors.

OIL LEAKAGE
Drain
The slide valves on the Bauer
motors are of a rigid design giving
little distortion even under pressure.
The leakage values are therefore
relatively small. T P
See below curves indicating the oil
leakage in the different slide valves
and motors.
NOTE
In a closed hydraulic circut the
motor casing leakage has to be
compensated by the delivery of the
booster pump only. The slide valve
leakage remains in the circuit.
The motor casing leakage must
always be drained.
