Introduction

For me the K to 12 program covers 13 years of basic education - kindergarten, six years
of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of Senior High
School to provide sufficient time for the mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong
learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skill development,
employment and entrepreneurship. there is no negative effects of k-12, the positive ones
however is that students will gain MORE knowledge, and they will have a license or
certificate to work after high school, just like the U.S., would it be bad to spend a little
more money and tuition for the sake of your children, as long as the parents keep a close
watch at their children when it comes to their studies, if k-12 were not implemented,
more students will fail in college and be bums when they grow old.

Introduction
K to 12 program have been implemented by the Department of Education
throughout the whole country. When the school year began in 2012,
incoming Filipino first grade students will study through 12 years of basic
education instead of 10 years; first year high school students will undergo 6
years of studying instead of 4.The additional of 2 years is expected to raise
our students on equal with the other school systems in Asia and also
globally. It is also supposed to teach students vocational college bound
subjects expected to help students attain intellectual competencies,
personal and civic responsibilities, and practical skills that will be useful in
terms of college readiness and employment demands. While the
government assigns and changes the curriculum for these two additional
years, there are various effects beside this double edged sword, may it be
positive or negative.

Importance of K 12 curriculum
Skill competency in the global job market – K-12 system aims to
improve Filipino students' mathematical, scientific, and linguistic
competence. With the new curriculum, DepEd promised to offer
higher quality education through tracks. Each track will give
students enough time to master a field and enhance their skills.
Reasons:
 Only country in Asia with 10 years of basic education –
Before implementing K-12, the Philippines was the last Asian country
and one of only three nations in the world with 10 years of basic
education. The new system, which follows a global standard, will put
Filipino students at par with the rest of the world.
 Poor quality of education – Students’ low scores in the
National Achievement Test (NAT) and Trends in
International Math and Science Study (TIMMS) are a
reflection of the current quality of education in the country.
 Too many non-practical subjects – Supported by the
findings of the study performed by SEAMEO INNOTECH, the
country’s old curriculum was too congested and lacked
practical application. While students did not get enough
instructional time to learn, they also missed the chance to be
prepared for actual professional work.
 Not prepared for college education – Due to lack of
practical application, past high school grads (in the old
curriculum) could not qualify to pursue higher education.

Purpose of K 12 curriculum
Districts that are pursuing competency-based systems share a
belief that the current purpose of K-12 education is to facilitate a
process through which all students graduate high school with the
academic and lifelong learning skills to be leaders in their
communities, and agents of their own success – whether in
college, career, or navigating the opportunities and challenges
they will encounter and challenges they will encounter in their
lives.
