INTRODUCTION

THE SOCIAL MEDIA: Exploring the Obliviousness of

Narcissism

In today’s world, we are really indulged by the likes of technology. As an

outcome, our virtual life is formed. The birth of social media become the

evidence of unlimited inter-action of every another. Specifically the students, as

the internet expand its horizon, the students is actively engaged such as having

account like FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM, TWITTER, etc. Students nowadays

are not illiterate when it comes in social networking sites. Comfortably, social

media makes a students boost his/her inner confidence when it comes to deal

in social life (Garcia 2016). It is because the students are very inclined when it

coms I comprehending deeply on social media In addition, it is possible that

the young adults who initialy felt socially isolated turned to social media or it

coud be that their increase used of social media somehow led to feeling isolated

from the real world (Elizabeth, 2017).

In the past, the communicating and free sharing of thoughts among

people are restricted and also unfeasible. But now, the obstacles cannot stop

the flow of information and knowledge. The students has a freedom to do

whatever they want via social media, uploading status on Facebook that makes

them socialize virtually. So, as a result, they are fostering a virtual friendship, in
the way that the students are also creating online identities that the real world

does not allow (Karadkar 2015). Hence, the internet has made many students

forget that they need to filter any information that they post. In fact, students are

really extrovertly concious in the social networking profiles of their social media

account. Nevertheless, there are many students who are not constantly

assessing the content which they are distributing online. All this can lead to

negative concerns even later on their life ( Armstrong 2012).

As of 2015’s, the largest social networking company, FACEBOOK has

1.49 billion active users is increasing every year., the Pew Research Center

found that the popularity of Facebook continous to grow as it is the most popular

social media site. One of the most inter of student users on such social

networking sites. As said and as per the survey conducted by the PEW

RESEACH COMPANY, 72 percent of High School and 78 percent of college

students spend on time on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. These numbers

indicate how much the student community is involved in the virtual world of

social media.

In terms of academic performances, the students depending ability on

the internet is considered as learning. The accessibility of information on social

meda makes them generalize their fucos on learnng, as well as on retaining

information. Students are exposed to the way of life which they educate

themselves on the important topics on their subjects (Armstrong 2012). Despite

of its good effect, still the concerned of health is on stake, the students

repercussion of sleep that intended to have an adequate rest. More importantly,

the addition of social media that divert their attention by multi-tasking their

errands while studying. The practical way of learning becomes useless,

because the students easily depend on the nternet or other medium that the

used (Garcia and Mwila 2015)

The ease of internet access worldwide has made it one of the most

popular medium of seeking information and for communication

(Ramamohanarao, 2007). The internet is now very dynamic in the modern

world. It has become an important device in education and social life that it is

progressively becoming essential in the daily life and of many people (Pew

Internet Research 2004). As Oskouie (2001) proposed that the internet has a

great advantage to both students as well as teachers used as a tool of

knowledge, creation and dissemination. Likewise, students use internet for the

majority their daily activities and information gathering as opposes to older

generation who used resources like books or newspaper (Lewis 2008).

and information gathering as opposes to older generation who used

resources like books or newspaper (Lewis 2008).

On the other hand, a study suggest that more than two hours of social

media used a day doubled the chances of a person experiencing social isolation

(US Psycholgist, 2017). IN addition, we are inherently social creatures, but

modern ife tends to label us instead of bringing us together. In other words,

while it may not be the solution people were hoping for (Primark, 2017). For

instance (Kuss & Griffths 2011) parroted that the internet is a highly

enlightening and entertaining medium, therefore people engage in several

acivities on it; some of which may be potentially addictive. One of such activities

is the use of social media.

In this regards, the connection of social media in terms of narcisssism is

a complex construct and represents multiple traits, indicative of both healthy

and unhealthy behaviours of students. (Kubarych, Deary,& Austin,2004) that

may explain the motivations behind SNS use. Therefore, conceptualizing

narcissism as just single construct might cause us to misunderstand the ways

in which SNS are used wto satisfy various psychological needs. Research has

in fact already begun wto examine how unhealthy components of narcissistic

personality relate to behavior on Facebook or other sites through social media

(Carpenter 2012).

Statement Of The Problem

Students nowadays are conciously sensetive when it comes to their onlin

presence in the virtual world. Wherein posting, sharing, and creating virtual

identities is a social sensation and currently exist. This study would like to

recognize the behaviors and pubicity of students in terms of social media used,

which can affect their study, social lives and personal emotions.

It present that it s not important to have a public figure in terms of many likes

and shares in social media. Furthermore, students display narcisstic behaiviour

just to sustain their public relations and to be considred as a media user of th

day. Also, that the student are unconsciously addict on social media. How does
